Chris Childress took advantage of Bassett standout Devonne Claybrooks' first-half foul trouble as William Byrd jumped out to a 20-point halftime lead and cruised to a 62-48 non-district boys' basketball victory Wednesday night in Bassett.
With Claybrooks sitting on the bench in the second quarter, Childress scored 11 of his game-high 25 points as the Terriers (3-0) outscored the Bengals 24-8 in the second quarter.
Bassett (3-2) cut the lead to 10 in the second half behind Claybrooks, who scored 18 of his 21 in the second half.
Tuesday's games
Craig County 61, Covington Boys Home 53: The Rockets did not have a field goal in the fourth quarter, but made 11 of 14 free throws in winning for the first time in two games. Previously unbeaten Boys Home trailed 19-6 after the first quarter, but got as close as five in the closing minutes. Sean Riddick had a game-high 22 points for the Indians (6-1). Dwayne Crawford and Jamie Fisher each had 17 for Craig County.
Girls, Cave Spring 88, Franklin County 31: Cheryl Rhodes had 21 points and Kristin Smith added 16 for the Knights (2-0, 1-0), who scored 30 points in the second quarter. Penee Clayborne had a team-high 15 points for host Franklin County (1-4 , 0-1).
