Project Discovery provides college info
TAP Project Discovery is currently recruiting students in grades 6 to 12 who attend school in Roanoke, Roanoke County and Salem.
The program works with students and their families to provide information and guidance on how to choose a college, find financial aid and scholarships and make the transition to college life.

Roanoke's First Night needs volunteers
Roanoke will hold its fifth annual First Night Celebration, a safe, alcohol-free New Year's Eve party in downtown Roanoke, Dec. 31. Volunteers are needed to work one of two shifts: 6-9 p.m. or 9 p.m.-midnight. All volunteers will be finished in time to see the fireworks display and grand finale set for midnight.

Volunteers needed for Tax Aide program
Tax Aide, a program sponsored by the American Association of Retired Persons and the Internal Revenue Service, seeks volunteers to provide free assistance to senior citizens preparing tax returns.
Volunteers should have properly completed and filed their own tax returns for the last two years, be comfortable working with numbers and enjoy working with people.
Training that emphasizes tax items affecting older people will be provided beginning in December.

Roanoke Valley SPCA seeks help
The Roanoke Valley Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals needs volunteers to serve as pet therapy workers, care for young, pregnant or ill animals, give talks on responsible pet ownership and organize SPCA programs, including the Santa Claws and Paws Christmas tree project.
Volunteers must attend a training session to qualify. The sessions are held the second Saturday of each month from 10:30-11:30 a.m. at the Williamson Road Library.
Children are invited to volunteer, but parents must attend the training sessions with their children.

New support group for caregivers
Lewis-Gale Regional Cancer Center and The American Cancer Society have announced a new program designed to help friends, acquaintances and caregivers of cancer patients provide support for and communicate with patients and their families.
The program will be offered in six segments running from Jan. 9 to March 26, 1996. All sessions will be held at Lewis-Gale Regional Cancer Center from 7 to 8 p.m.
A videotape hosted by Dr. Nancy Snyderman of "Good Morning America" will highlight each session, supplemented by local health care professionals, including Dr. Jeffrey F. Patton; oncology social workers Suzanne Zollman and Sarah Wolfe; dietician Audrey Burt and Daphne Depuy, executive director, American Cancer Society.
Local churches, civic groups and other organizations may schedule this program at their facilities by calling Sarah Wolfe at 776-4160.
