NEWBERN DECKED OUT FOR OPEN HOUSE

We'll be fa-la-la-la-la-ing all the way to Newbern this weekend.

"Deck the Halls," the annual open house at the Wilderness Road Regional Museum, continues through Dec. 22. The museum in historic Newbern has a display of Madonnas and manger scenes, as well as a huge Christmas tree trimmed with handmade ornaments. It's all gussied up with traditional red and green decorations, too.

Museum volunteers will be serving refreshments Saturday and Sunday from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Admission is free.

If you want to bring something to put under the tree, the museum always needs kitchen and bath supplies. Paper items, scrubbers, dishcloths, detergent, liquid soap and napkins are great gifts. If you have a handmade ornament to put on the Christmas tree, don't forget to bring it.

Shoppers will find holiday items, homemade candy and books on local history and cooking for sale in the museum gift shop.

Regular hours at the museum are Tuesday through Saturday, 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Sunday, 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. It will be closed on Christmas and New Year's Day.

To get to Newbern from Interstate 81, take Exit 98 in Pulaski County.

GOOSEBUMP MUSIC: When the voices of the Blacksburg Master Chorale join together, you just can't stop those goosebumps.

The chorale will perform Saturday at 8 p.m. in the Blacksburg Baptist Church. This year, the singers will return to their tradition of devoting a major portion of the concert to a performance of Handel's "Messiah."

Soloists are soprano Clare Fischer-Davies, alto Rhonda Short, tenor Gary Fulsebakke and bass-baritone Wayne Kompelien.

In addition to the holiday favorite, you'll hear other seasonal numbers and you may join in the caroling.

Admission Saturday is $8 for adults or $4 for senior citizens and students. Advance tickets are available at Books Strings & Things in downtown Blacksburg and at the ticket office in Squires Student Center. Tickets also will be sold at the door.

FEAST FOR THE EYES: Works by 24 local artists are on display now at Glade Baptist Church in Blacksburg. The exhibit, "Advent - A Season of Anticipation," features works depicting the artists' interpretations of the holy season.

You'll see works by many well-known Blacksburg artists: Nadine Allen, Martha Dillard, Joe Germana, Jim Gorman, Carol Hoge, Emogene Huff, Madeline Hylton, Nancy Keenan, Judith Schwab and Laurie Zuckerman.

Christiansburg artists include Barbara Capps, Aileen Fletcher, Gary Harkrader, Jeht Matous and Jean Nelson. Jennifer Collins of Radford and Alex Wind of Shawsville have pieces on display, too.

Other participants are Roberta McGuire and Chris and Don Meador of Salem, Peggy Brandt of Roanoke, Barbara Lashley of Vinton, Martha Brown Mayo of Daleville and Beverly Garraghty of Montvale.

The exhibit will remain at the church through Dec. 23. You'll invited to come see it Mondays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. or 6 to 8 p.m., Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m. or Sundays from 11 a.m. (at the worship service) to 4 p.m.

Glade Baptist Church is at 1600 Glade Road, one mile behind the Kroger at University Mall.

YOU'LL FIND HIM LYING IN A MANGER.... The birth and life of Jesus is a story of miracles.

Christiansburg's Main Street Baptist Church invites everyone to see the story re-created with music, costumes and drama. "Go Change the World - An Angelic Celebration" is a musical pageant involving over 100 members of the church.

The church's music ministry, directed by Charlotte Smith, will present the pageant Saturday, Sunday and Monday, beginning at 7:30 each evening. Admission is free but an offering will be accepted.

HOT COUNTRY: Broken Reins, one of the hottest local country bands, plays Saturday at the Highlander Brewery and Pub in Radford. The music starts at 8 p.m.

The band has opened for some biggies out of Nashville, including Marty Stewart, the Gibson Miller Band, Johnnie Paycheck, John Conley and Mel McDaniel.

Members of Broken Reins are Bill Memitt, Sheila Gallimore, Richard Wallace, Raymond Howell and Shannon Wickline.

The cover charge Saturday is $6.

FINISHED YOUR SHOPPING YET? What do you mean you haven't even started?

If you're looking for that one-of-a-kind gift, make sure you check out the Gallery of Local Artists at New River Valley Mall. Artists from around the valley have paintings, sculpture, jewelry, photos and other original works for sale.

The gallery is open during regular hours at the mall in Christiansburg. It will be closed Christmas Day but will re-open for shopping through Dec. 31.

DON'T FORGET FIDO: The Humane Society of Montgomery County will be selling gifts for your furry friends Saturday at Kroger in Blacksburg's University Mall.

In addition to the pet presents, volunteers will have a variety of sweets for your holiday entertaining. The bake sale runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Proceeds from sales benefit the humane society which operates a local shelter for lovable (and adoptable) dogs and cats.
