Several area businesses have made donations to allow local artists to display their wares in the Gallery of Local Artists at the New River Valley Mall. The display will continue until Dec. 31.
Making donations were Mike Poldiak, manager of the mall, who gave shop space, security and maintenance support; First National Bank, which has given checking and credit-card services this year and for the past six years; Hubbell Lighting, which gave light fixtures and bulbs; Alvis Electric, which installed light fixtures and wired electrical outlets; State Electric Supply, which gave supplies for the installation of light fixtures and outlets; Reed Lumber, which donated glass doors and windows; the Evergreen Bell-Capozzi Bed and Breakfast, which helped install the doors and windows; and U.S. Sign Company, which made a banner for the mall entrance.
The Blacksburg High School Student Council donated more than 150 Thanksgiving baskets, containing a ham plus other foods, to area needy families.
The Blacksburg Police Department helped select families and distributed the baskets.
The Virginia Council of Nurse Practitioners donated $1,000 to the Women's Resource Center in Radford. The council supports facilities that provide care to women because many women do not have access to quality health care because of divorce, unemployment, and a higher percentage of women working part-time jobs that do not provide health benefits.
Nurse practitioners are nurses who have received advanced training. They work closely with physicians, integrating wellness promotion and patient education into their practice. More than 1,500 nurse practitioners currently practice in Virginia.
