LIBERTY ROLLS PAST STAUNTON RIVER

Senior J.J. Coles led a third-quarter spurt that sparked Liberty, and the Minutemen went on to a 96-60 rout of Staunton River in a Seminole District boys' game Friday night in Bedford.

Liberty, up 13 at the half, opened the third quarter with a 10-0 run and Coles scored 11 of his team-high 20 points in the period.

The Minutemen (4-0 overall, 4-0 district) pressed the taller Golden Eagles and outlasted them with speed and quickness. Sophomore Raymond Arrington added 17 points for Liberty and Gregg Reynolds and Kevin Smith scored 11 apiece.

Hunter Hoggatt had a game-high 22 points for Staunton River (2-3, 2-3) and Jeff English added 12.

Floyd County 62, Carroll County 61: Travis Cantrell pumped in 32 points and Ryan Turman made the winning free throw with two seconds left as the Buffaloes (2-1) won a non-district game in Hillsville.

Cantrell made six 3-pointers, including one with 27 seconds left that tied the score at 61.

Carroll County (1-4) ran down the clock until Turman made a steal with eight seconds left and was fouled driving to the basket. He converted one of two free throws.

The Cavaliers got 13 points each from Justin Iroler and Jody Edwards.

Montcalm (W.Va.) 59, Rocky Gap 51: The Eagles' Will Dotson hit three 3-pointers in the first quarter, but he didn't get many looks after that as the hosts won a non-district game.

Dotson led Rocky Gap (0-3) with 17 points, but Montcalm's diamond-and-one defense held the Eagles to six points in the second quarter.

The game was even in almost every other respect. Nathan Blessing added 14 points for Rocky Gap (0-3). Chad Blevins led Montcalm (2-0) with 15 points and Josh Bailey had 12.

Alleghany 58, Covington 57: The Mountaineers' Kevin Cook drained the go-ahead 3-pointer with 1.6 seconds left as Alleghany squeaked by the rival Cougars in Covington.

Cook finished with six points, but it was Jay Meggison who led Alleghany (1-2) to its first victory of the season. Meggison accounted for 15 of the Mountaineers' points.

Mike Barber poured in a game-high 17 points for Covington (1-4).

Patrick County 66, Fieldale-Collinsville 54: The Cougars led by two at halftime, but pulled away with good free-throw shooting to defeat the Cavaliers in a Piedmont District game in Stuart.

Patrick County (4-2, 3-2) made 20 of 25 free throws, going 9-for-13 in the fourth quarter. Jason Wood led the Cougars with 20 points.

Fieldale-Collinsville (4-1, 4-1) was led by Brad Harman's 23 points.

GW-Danville 96, Franklin County 78: GW-Danville had seven scorers in double figures, rolled to 61 points in the first half and stayed unbeaten with a non-district victory in Rocky Mount.

Nathan Poole led the septet of double-figure scorers with 20 points, including three 3-pointers.

Franklin County (0-5) stayed with GW (5-0) for a quarter, but the Danville squad outscored Franklin County 29-18 in the second period to take a 61-42 lead.

Franklin County, which had its best shooting night of the season (49 percent), had a couple of opportunities to cut its deficit to single digits in the fourth quarter, but GW would go on a spurt to increase its margin to 14 points or more.

K.C. Hancock led Franklin County with 22 points. Kermit Noel had 18, Jeremy Adkins 13 and Travis Kent 10.

Parry McCluer 70, Rockbridge County 63: The Fighting Blues withstood the Wildcats' 3-point onslaught to prevail in a non-district game in Lexington.

Chip and David Coleman each accounted for 15 points for Parry McCluer (6-0).

Rockbridge County (1-4) drained nine 3-pointers, led by Jamie Terrell's four. He finished with 19 points and Rick Wright scored 23.

Narrows 55, Radford 50: The Green Wave rallied from a 15-point deficit late in the third quarter to beat the Bobcats in a non-district game in Narrows.

The Green Wave (3-1) trailed 33-23 at halftime and 44-31 after three quarters, but rallied behind Joe Shipbaugh's 11 fourth-quarter points.

Narrows took its first lead with two minutes to play when Robbie Stafford's layup made it 47-46. Stafford finished with 15 to lead the Green Wave, Pruett had 14 and Shipbaugh 13.

John Robertson scored 17 for Radford (1-2) and Larnelle Lewis had 14.

Christiansburg 66, Galax 55: The Blue Demons outscored the Maroon Tide 24-10 in the last four minutes to earn a non-district victory in Galax.

With 4:26 left in the fourth, Galax led 45-42. On two subsequent possessions, the Maroon Tide turned over the ball and Christiansburg hit 3-point shots. Following a missed Galax layup, the Blue Demons ran the floor and converted to make the lead 50-45.

Brian Porter led Christiansburg with 15 points. Nate Noel led Galax with 20.

George Wythe 72, Castlewood 65: The Maroons overcame poor free-throw shooting in the fourth quarter to win a Hogoheegee District game in Castlewood.

Wythe (5-0, 3-0) was 10-for-17 from the line in the final period. Brian Barnes led the Maroons with 19 points and teammate Freddy Moses added 14.

The Blue Devils (2-2, 2-1) were led by Josh Miotke's 18 points.

Magna Vista 49, Bassett 46: Two free throws, one each by Marcus Hairston and Travis Preston in the past 30 seconds sealed the Warriors' Piedmont District victory over the Bengals in Ridgeway.

The score was tied at 33 going into the fourth quarter, but Magna Vista held off Bassett thanks to leading scorer Elliott Millner, who had 11 points in the second half and 18 for the game. Millner also had 10 rebounds, including seven on the offensive end.

Jermaine Simmons added 10 for the Warriors (4-1, 4-1). Devonne Claybrooks led Bassett with 21.

Bland 62, Auburn 55: The Rockets overcame a five-point halftime deficit to defeat the Eagles in non-district boys game in Riner.

Bland (1-0) capitalized on poor Auburn free-throw shooting; the Eagles (0-7) were 18-of-33 for the game.

The Rockets hit their free throws when they needed to, going 9-for-13 in the fourth quarter.

Lee Meadows led Bland with 22 points and teammates Smokey Parmenter and John Thompson added 11 each. Kenny Wojiechowski led Auburn with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Laurel Park 74, Martinsville 50: In Martinsville, the Lancers built an 11-point first-quarter lead and never looked back as they cruised past their crosstown rivals in the Piedmont District.

Rashad Wall was the leading scorer for Laurel Park (2-3, 2-3) with 18 points. Eric Jones chipped in 16, including four 3-pointers, and Jeff Slade added 10. Corey Flood contributed a dozen points.

Leander Preston was the big man for the Bulldogs (1-4, 1-4) with 15 points and Wade Falls added 11.

Roanoke Valley Christian 88, Shawsville 58: Chris Huffman scored 20 points and made four 3-pointers as the Eagles pulled away for a non-district victory over the visiting Shawnees.

Roanoke Valley Christian (5-1) made five 3-pointers in the second quarter and outscored Shawsville 28-15 behind Simon Foster's eight points. Foster finished with 12 points.

Eric Johnson had 11 points and eight assists for the Eagles, and Mark DeLong and Joel Nester scored 10 points each.

Larry Smith led Shawsville (1-3) with 16 points and Doug Ashworth had 12.

Lebanon 79, Rural Retreat 65: Freshman McKenzie McNutty scored 19 points in the first half as the Pioneers ran out to a 22-point halftime lead and cruised to a Hogoheegee District victory in Rural Retreat.

McNutty scored two second-half points to finish with a game-high 21, but he torched the Indians inside in the first two quarters to give Lebanon (1-3, 1-2) a 22-point halftime lead.

Ryan Cowden scored 15 points for the Pioneers, Ben Carpenter had 11 and Tommy Johnson and Travis Brightbill each had 10.

Wayne Terry led Rural Retreat (0-3, 0-1) with 16 points, Thomas Newton had 13 and Kenny Lethco 10.

Bath County 54, Wilson Memorial 41: The Chargers and senior Jon Rodgers debuted with a bang as they shut down the Green Hornets in a non-district game in Hot Springs.

Bath County had not played previously because many of its players still were playing football a week ago.

But that did not deter the Chargers, who burst to an early 12-4 lead. Their biggest lead came early in the fourth quarter, when they got up 41-27.

Rodgers led the way with 18 points and David Buzzard had 12.

Giles 76, Craig County 40: The Spartans started strong, building a 25-point halftime lead, and never relented as they cruised past the Rockets in non-district play in New Castle.

Fourteen Giles players scored, led by Josh Stevens with a dozen points. Stevens scored 10 of those in the second quarter. Ben Brown had 11, nine in the fourth quarter, and Jon Keane contributed 10 for the Spartans (3-1).

Jamie Fisher racked up a game-high 14 points for Craig County (1-2).

Gateway Christian 50, Greater Beckley Christian (W.Va.) 49: Ryan Gordon had six points in the final quarter and Monty Pence sank two free throws in the final minute as the Crusaders (3-3) beat the hosts (4-4).

Gateway Christian fell behind early, but came back to lead 22-19 at the half.

The Crusaders' cause was helped by outstanding board work. J.T. Surface had 14 rebounds and Scott Perfater grabbed 12.

Gordon finished with 21 points and Brad Duncan had 10.

Girls

St. Mary's (Md.) 60, Pulaski County 56, OT: The Cougars saw a nine-point advantage at the start of the fourth quarter fade, and they fell in overtime to the visitors from Annapolis.

Tara Foran led the St.Mary's comeback in the fourth period by scoring eight of her game-high total in the quarter. In overtime St.Mary's (7-0) drained a 3-pointer and took advantage of the Cougars' fouling, hitting five of eight free-throw attempts.

Foran led the visitors with 16 points and Heidi Moldenaur contributed 14.

Catrina Williams led the Cougars (2-2) with 12 points, eight in the third quarter. Sarah Donald added 10 points in the overtime loss.

St. Mary's will visit Cave Spring at 7:30 tonight.

William Fleming 69, Franklin County 29: The Colonels (4-1, 1-0) rolled in their Roanoke Valley District opener, routing the visiting Eagles (1-5, 0-2).

Sisters Shaunarey and Renita Walker led Fleming with 14 points apiece, while Kiann Trent joined them in double figures with 12.

Penee Claiborne led Franklin County with 13 points.
