Open house set for birthing center

BLACKSBURG - Montgomery Regional Hospital will unveil its new birthing center Tuesday at 9 a.m. with a ribbon cutting and open house.

The center, at the rear of the hospital, is a 10,000-square-foot, $1.9 million self-contained facility with its own admission and discharge areas.

It has a separate entrance and parking lot and is located adjacent to the operating room.

The center has 10 private rooms, each of which is equipped for labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum. The rooms feature whirlpool baths and music systems for relaxation during labor.

Also in each suite is a family area with a refrigerator, table and chairs. Beds are available for expectant fathers.

The birthing center features a nursery for normal and high-risk infant care, including a centralized fetal monitoring and infant abduction prevention system and videotaping capability for recording the delivery.

Business community names and changes

BLACKSBURG - Recent names in the news in the New River Valley's business community include:

Terri E. LeGrand is a new attorney with the office of Joseph J. Steffen Jr. LeGrand is a 1993 graduate of Wake Forest University School of Law. A native of Galax and a 1984 graduate of Galax High School, she practiced in Galax during 1993.

She practices primarily in family, criminal and juvenile law. She has been a board member for the Southwest Virginia Legal Aid Society, and she served on the Long-Range Planning Committee for the City of Galax.

Steffen's office, at 201 Church St. in Blacksburg, represents clients primarily in workers compensation, auto and product injuries, social security, and employment discrimination.

The newest account executive at the Blacksburg office of Dean Witter Reynolds Inc. is Mark B. Wigginton.

Wigginton has worked for 16 years in retail and commercial banking. He holds a bachelor of science degree from Virginia Tech and lives in Pulaski County with his wife and two children.

Michell Vaught has been promoted from marketing director and account executive to general sales manager at Travis Broadcasting Corporation, owner and operator of KOOL Country 100.7 FM/990 AM and WFNR 710 AM.

Vaught is a 1993 graduate of Radford University, where she earned a bachelor of arts degree in business management and marketing. She is a member of the Christiansburg/Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Blacksburg Chamber of Commerce. She is a member of Christiansburg's Main Street Baptist Church, where her father, Pete du Plessis, was pastor for six years.

Pulaski County's Century 21 Home Town Realty has announced that Pat Kirkland won the company's sales achievement award and listing superstar award for the third quarter.

Kirkland has six years of real estate experience, specializing in residential sales.

Gerald Bolen was top listing agent for October. A real estate agent for eight years, Bolen specializes in residential sales.

Linda Hall was top selling agent for October. She has been a real estate agent for two years and also specializes in residential sales.

7 candidates for chamber named

BLACKSBURG - The Greater Blacksburg Chamber of Commerce has announced seven candidates for its 16-member board of directors.

They are Herb Conley, manager of the Christiansburg Wal-Mart; Patricia Green-Wells, co-owner of Pargo's; Susan Henderson, personal banker with First National Bank; Robert Moore, human resources director for Hoechst Celanese; Mike Poldiak, manager of the New River Valley Mall; Joe Steffen, attorney; and Judy Tynan, marketing director for Montgomery Regional Hospital.

The chamber will accept further nominations by petition until the Dec. 21 deadline. Chamber members can be nominated by submitting a petition bearing the names of 10 chamber members. If no further nominations are received, the seven people already nominated will be elected.

The board members will serve three-year terms and cannot succeed themselves. Approximately one-third of the board, which sets policy for the chamber, is up for election each year.

Quality control meeting Tuesday

CHRISTIANSBURG - The Radford-Roanoke Section of the American Society for Quality Control will meet Tuesday at the Farmhouse restaurant at 5:30 p.m.

Michael D. Nichols, manager of vehicle reliability and acquisition control for Federal Express and the regional director for the society, will speak on "Business Elements in a Service Environment" at 7:30. At 5:30, "Diagnosing Sources of Variation" will be the topic for Talking Quality Techniques, followed by a social at 6 and dinner at 6:30.

Nichols is responsible for measuring, monitoring and reporting on fleet reliability and information management as well as the department's quality improvement plan.

Accountant opens new office in Christiansburg

CHRISTIANSBURG - C. Jeffrey Stump, who has been an accountant in the New River Valley for 16 years, has opened an office at 302 Roanoke St. in Christiansburg.

He will have an open house at the location Wednesday from 3 to 7 p.m.

Stump, who also has offices at 203 Roanoke St. in Blacksburg and at 73 West Main St. in Pulaski, offers a full range of services, including tax preparation and planning, payroll escrow, bookkeeping, and auditing.
