BOWER, Walter Bernard, 74, of Roanoke Co., passed away Friday, December 15, 1995. Mr. Bower was a member of First Baptist Church and was retired Vice President for Fuel Oil & Equipment Company. Surviving are his wife, Jane W. Bower; his sons and daughter-in-law, R. F. Bower, Chesapeake, D. Michael and Annette Bower, Macon, Ga.; his daughters and son-in-law, Joyce Dillard, Lynn R. Bower, both of Salem, Sheila and Kenny Cooper, Roanoke; two stepchildren, Gayle W. Daniel and her husband, William, Roanoke, Dr. Paul A. Wood III of Texas; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Nettie and Dow Wheeler, Cedartown, Ga., Margaret and Norman Adams, Roanoke; a brother and sister-in-law, Lewis P. and Carmen Bower, Durham, Conn.; mother-in-law, Sarah F. BRANNOCK, Alma Gardner, 83, of Brancrest, East Lee Highway, Wytheville, passed away Friday, December 15, 1995. She was a native of Carroll County, Va. and the daughter of the late Alexander Lafayette Gardner and Fannie Emaline Vass Gardner. She was a graduate of Radford State Teacher's College and spent a term at Transylvania University. She taught school in Carroll County for many years and also taught in Elizabeth City County, Hampton, Va. Mrs. Brannock was a member of the Wytheville Baptist Church and the Bethany Sunday School Class. She was a member of the Wilderness Road Chapter of the DAR and served many years as a Pink Lady with Wythe County Community Hospital Ladies Auxiliary. She is survived by her husband, Earl D. Brannock; one daughter and son-in-law, Emaline Brannock Winter and Dan Winter, Charlottesville; one grandson, Daniel Winter, Charlottesville; two sisters, Mrs. Robert (Pearle) Canada, Mrs. Paul D. Wylie, both of Waynesboro; a brother, R. Gerald Gardner, Hillsville. A funeral service will be held Monday, December 18, 1995, at 2 p.m. at the Wytheville Baptist Church, with the Rev. BUCKELEW, Evelyn O., 82, of Roanoke, died Saturday, December 16, 1995, in a local hospital. She was the widow of Lawrence R. Buckelew, and was a retired Registered Nurse from Gill Memorial Hospital with 30 years of service. Surviving are four nieces, Nancy Brown of Vinton, Evelyn Ward of Salem, Eleanor Bailey of Roanoke and Julia M. Andrews and husband Michael of Vinton; two nephews, Michael C. Mitchell Jr. and wife Judy of Roanoke and Charles Bailey o f Montvale, and a special friend, Mary Ann Callahan of Roanoke. CARROLL, Clifford William, of Marion, passed away Saturday, December 16, 1995, at Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion. He was the beloved husband of Mary Lockhart Carroll, loving father and father-in-law of Shirley Janette Carroll Pruett and John Allen Pruett, and a most special grandfather to Michele Denise Pruett and Teresa Carroll Pruett. He was born on September 28, 1920, in Lee County, where he grew up under the loving care of his grandmother, Alice Johnson Carroll. On the third day of January, 1941, he enlisted in the Army. His battles and campaigns in World War II were Tunisia, Sicily, Normandy, northern France, Rhineland, Algeria and French Morocco. For wounds received in battles at Sicily and Normandy, he received the Purple Heart and Oak Leaf Cluster to the Purple Heart. After leaving the Army, he returned to Lee County, where he married Mary L. Lockhart. On July 21, 1995, they celebrated fifty years of marriage. While on this earth, he gave freely of all that he possessed - his love, his worldly possessions, his time - to his family, and his leaving has left an emptiness in their hearts. The family will receive friends at Seaver-Brown Funeral Chapel on Sunday night from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held by the Reverend David Neitch at Seaver-Brown Chapel on Sunday night at 8 p.m. A private entombment will be held at Rose Lawn Chapel of Memories Mausoleum on Monday.

FICHTENGER, Charles R., 93, of Lynchburg, formerly of Roanoke, beloved husband, father and grandfather, died Saturday, December 16, 1995 in Virginia Baptist Hospital, Lynchburg. He retired as Treasurer, after 50 years, with Norfolk & Western Railway. Before his retirement, he was an active member of the Second Presbyterian Church, Rotary Club, United Way and a former President of Roanoke Country Club. After his retirement, he was fund raising chairman for the Glover C. Robbins Cancer Detection Unit while living at Hound Ears, N.C. and later was active in affairs at Westminister Canterbury, Lynchburg. He is survived by his wife, Roberta Moore Fichtenger; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Betty and Connie L. Sellers, Susan F. and John W. JONES, Lily Pennington, (``Penny""), 63, of 909 -D Shelby Drive, Greensboro, N.C., died Saturday, December 16, 1995, at Moses Cone Hospital. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton, W.Va. Mrs. Jones, a native of Hiawatha, W.Va., was a registered nurse for 43 years, 15 years of which she was with The Women's Hospital in Greensboro as the night administrative coordinator. She was a graduate of Northfork High School in Northfork, W.Va., and Knoxville General Hospital School of Nursing. She is survived by her daughter, Karyn L. Barry of Newport News, Va.; her son and daughter-in-law, Samuel David and Beth Jones of Anthony, Fla., three sisters, Sadie M. McDaniel of Catawba, Va., Brenda Robinson of Greensboro and Helen Gauntt of Vineland, N.J.; grandchildren, Thomas and Kimberly Barry, and Samuel David Jones Jr., and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Rufus and Ethel Pennington. LITTREAL, William Randolph, (``Bill""), 65, of Austinville, died Friday, December 15,1995 in the Pulaski Community Hospital. He was born in Wythe County, the son of the late William S. and Lorna Poole Littreal. He was a retired Washington, D. C. police officer and a member of the BPOE of Galax and the Moose Lodge in Suitland, Md., also, a life member of the Grover King Post #1115, V.F.W. He was a U. S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was preceded in death by a brother, Howard Littreal, and two sisters, Juanita Arnold and Pearl Williams. He is survived by his wife, Betty Grubb Littreal, of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Joe Kimball, Alexandria, Jane and Tony Grimsley, Virginia Beach, Pamela and Robert Frazier, Austinville; seven grandchildren, Maeghan and Kari Kimball, Sierra and Jarrett Cowan, Victoria Grimsley, Jeremy and Cory Frazier; three sisters and spouses, Frances Huffman, Dayton, Ohio, Doris and Charles Bralley, Rural Retreat, Donna and Paul Ogle, Wytheville; several nieces and nephews also survive, including a special niece, Judy Price. SPENDER, William Lewis, 84, of 834 John Humphrey Road, Burgaw, N.C., died Friday, December 15, 1995. Jones of Richmond, Va.; two sisters, Marianne Dunigan of Fayetteville, N.C., and Frances Pollard of Lake Alfred, Fla.; nine grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Ada Mitchell Spender in 1966, and his parents, James William and Nancy Dillon Spender. Mr. Spender served in the U. S. Army during World War II in the Pacific and Europe, and 26 years in the Army Reserve. He worked at the U. S. Marine Air Station at Camp Lejeune, N.C., for 25 years. TILGHMAN, William Tench, 82, of Roanoke, died Friday, December 15, 1995, in a local hospital. He was a retired salesman for Roanoke Fruit and Produce, a member of Raleigh Court United Methodist Church and a lifetime member of the B.P.O.E. Elks Club. He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyne Barker Tilghman. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Anne T. and Dr. David W. Scott III of Fredericksburg; a son and daughter-in-law, William B. and Ann B. TURNER, Ethel Lynn Mann, 85, of Richmond, died Thursday, December 14, 1995, at Elizabeth Adam Crump Manor in Richmond. Mrs. Turner was born in Massachu setts, the daughter of the late Richard Forrest and Rose Martineau Mann. She was a registered nurse and a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Rocky Mount. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 60 years, Lloyd Shattuck Turner; and son, David Harvey Turner. Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Nancy Rose Turner Vacca and Dr. Richard Vacca, Richmond; grandchildren and spouses, Richard S. and Diane Vacca, Dean and Lynn Vacca Dillingham, John and Monica Vacca; and four other grandchildren; also several great-grandchildren. WERTZ, Larry W., 50, of Tampa, Fla., formerly of Roanoke, died Thursday, December 14, 1995 following a prolonged illness. Mr. Wertz was a native of Roanoke, Va. and moved to Tampa in 1970, where he served in the rank of Captain as an Assistant Staff Judge Advocate in the U. S. Air Force at MacDill Air Force Base. He was graduated from the Virginia Military Institute and Washington & Lee University School of Law. Following his tour of duty at MacDill AFB, he entered into the private practice of law in the Tampa Bay area. He practiced with the firm of Williams, Brasfield, Wertz, Fuller, Goldman, Freeman and Lovell, P.A., in St. Petersburg, until he became ill. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and admitted to practice law in Virginia and Florida. He was a member of the Hillsborough and Pinellas County Bar Association and active in trial lawyers and real estate, probate and trust sections of the Florida bar. Surviving is his wife, Marie Wertz; two children, Brent of Miami, Fla. and Heather of Tampa, Fla.; mother, Novella Henderson of Roanoke, Va.; a sister, Jean; brother-in-law, John; and nephew, Bruce Schultz, all of Atlanta, Ga. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 19, 1995, at 2 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Stake Center, Salem. Interment will be in Sherwood Memorial Park. Memorials may be sent to the University of Arkansas Medical Science, 4301 West Markham, Slot 623, Little Rock, Arkansas, 72205, or to a charity of your choice for medical research in any disease. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Lotz Salem Chapel.
