Firefighters used water to cool off an overheated oil tank that had threatened to catch fire outside Yokohama Tire Corp. in Salem on Sunday, a fire official said.
Brownish-gray smoke coming from the partially full 8,000-gallon storage tank triggered a call for help at 11:19 a.m. When crews arrived, the oil, which is kept warm so it will flow, was popping hot because of a malfunctioning heating element, Capt. Ronnie Perdue said.
No one was injured.
Perdue said state environmental regulators will monitor cleanup efforts. Yokohama had no comment, company security guard Dave Ludwig said after the incident.
