Exchanges to get
toll-free calls
Calls between Citizens Telephone Cooperative's Locust Grove exchange in Floyd County and Bell Atlantic Corp.'s Christiansburg exchange will be toll-free beginning in April under a plan approved last week by the State Corporation Commission.
The SCC said Monday it endorsed an extended calling service plan between the two exchanges. Under the plan, customers will pay a higher basic monthly rate in return for toll-free service.
Customers in the Locust Grove exchange petitioned the commission for the plan earlier this year and nearly 59 percent responding to a poll voted in favor of it. Locust Grove customers with residential flat-rate service will pay an extra $2.80 per month.
No Christiansburg customers objected to the plan when given an opportunity to comment, a commission spokesman said. Residential customers in Christiansburg will pay an additional 20 cents per month.
Phones in the Locust Grove exchange have a 651 prefix. Those in the Christiansburg exchange begin with 320, 381 or 382. -Staff report
