Shirley Noell donated to the Good Neighbors Fund in memory of her parents, Clarence and Mildred Chittum.
"They worked long and hard hours their entire life and raised a family of five," wrote Noell. Clarence Chittum delivered milk for Clover Creamery Co. in Roanoke for 30 years. At Christmas, he and his wife gathered greens on Poor Mountain and stayed up late at night making wreaths. "Then she would sell them early the next morning on the Market," said Noell.
"They were conservative in their living in order to make ends meet and to put aside a small portion for their elderly years," she continued. Upon the death of her parents, Noell said, the small amount remaining in their estate was divided among the children.
"It has become a personal commitment of mine," she said, "to each year pay tribute to them by giving a portion of their earnings left to me to help those with financial burdens."
"They would approve of celebrating Jesus' birth with this gift," she said.
In the past, the faculty and staff at North Cross School have held a holiday party for employees and their spouses. But this year they voted to forgo the party and send the money to the Good Neighbors Fund instead.
Everyone seems pleased with the change.
"We are all very blessed and hope that this will help brighten the holidays for others," wrote Liz Holt, director of the lower school at North Cross.
