Zbigniew Brzezinski, the Polish-born professor of government who served as national security adviser to President Carter, received Poland's top honor Tuesday for supporting his homeland's transformation to democracy.
Brzezinski, 67, was awarded the Order of the White Eagle - the nation's highest and oldest civil distinction dating back to 1705.
``As a statesman who helped shape the U.S. policy towards the former Communist countries ... you understood and appreciated our striving for freedom,'' President Lech Walesa said during a ceremony at the presidential palace.
