Cave Spring used a decisive third-quarter scoring run and its height advantage inside to beat Northside 65-60 in a non-district boys' basketball game Tuesday night on the Knights' floor.
Cave Spring (4-2) outscored the Vikings 25-14 in the third quarter to take a 48-43 lead. The Knights, who trailed 29-23 at halftime, came out in a 3-2 zone in the third quarter in an attempt to neutralize Northside's perimeter game.
The Vikings made eight of 33 3-point field goals. Justin Porterfield and Ben Peete made three each.
It was Cave Spring's inside power, though, that made the difference. Alex Phillips finished with a game-high 19 points and 13 rebounds, and he, Olin McClain and Billy Frantz combined for 19 third-quarter points.
Cave Spring outrebounded the Vikings 34-17.
The Knights trailed 24-23 in the final seconds of the first half when point guard Jeff Lang was whistled for fouling Porterfield on a 3-point try and was given a technical for arguing the call. Porterfield made all five free throws to give Northside (2-2) a six-point lead.
Lang made up for that by going 7-for-9 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter to hold the Vikings at bay. He finished with 17 points and McClain had 11.
Porterfield led the Vikings with 18 points, Peete had 16 and Spence Peters had 11.
Pulaski County 68, Salem 65: Pulaski County looked good in the first and third quarters, while Salem did the job in the second and fourth. Pulaski, however, was a bit better overall as it eked out a victory in Dublin.
``That's about what it came down to, I guess,'' said Cougars coach Pat Burns.
Pulaski got out to a 22-10 lead by the end of the first quarter, mainly due to freshman Dorian Hendricks' 12 quick points. He was 9-for-10 from the field in the game.
The Spartans' Herschel Thomas did Hendricks better in the fourth, scoring 14 of his team-high 19 points in that quarter.
Free throws, however, kept the Cougars (2-1) ahead as Salem (1-2) could never get the lead.
Pulaski's Ron Branch led all scorers with 23 points on 10-of-11 shooting. He had eight rebounds and Hendricks had five.
Jamar McNair added 13 points for the Cougars.
Salem got 10 points apiece from Andy Beach and Kwan Lewis.
James River 106, Covington Boys Home 50: Shahan Burrell scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds as every James River player scored en route to a 56-point non-district victory over in Buchanan.
Burrell was the only starter in double figures for the Knights (6-0), while Brian LeFlore chipped in 13.
Junior Derrick Lithicum added 12 points - his first points of the season - and Travis Blankenship also had 12 for James River.
Covington Boys Home (6-3) was led by Freddy Portillo, who scored 19 points and Chris Thornton, who had 10.
Blacksburg 66, Lord Botetourt 36: The Indians outscored the Cavaliers by 19 points in the third quarter, adding to an already large halftime lead, and went on to win the non-district battle in Blacksburg.
Phillip Klaus was the high scorer for Blacksburg (1-3) with 18 points. Robert Pauley led Lord Botetourt (0-4) with eight points.
Girls
GW-Danville 39, William Fleming 37: Shanna Price scored a game-high 15 points as the Eagles survived a late rally by to defeat the Colonels in a non-district game in Danville.
Price scored 13 of her points in the first half. Montrese Dotson added 10, including six in the third quarter, as the Eagles (7-1) jumped out to a 10-point lead.
The Colonels (4-2) cut the lead to two in the fourth quarter behind Shaunarey Walker, who scored five of her 11 in the final period. Kiann Trent added nine for Fleming.
Cave Spring 82, Patrick Henry 32: The Knights continued their dominance of the Roanoke Valley District by downing the Patriots at Patrick Henry.
Cave Spring (3-1 overall, 2-0 district) dominated from the onset, building a 40-12 halftime lead.
Cheryl Rhodes led the Knights with 19 points. Alyssa Reddick added 16. Carrie Moore led the Patriots (0-4, 0-2) with nine points.
Lynchburg Christian 38, Roanoke Valley Christian 36: Diane Norman scored 14 points as the Bulldogs edged the Eagles in a Blue Ridge Conference contest in Lynchburg.
Lynchburg Christian (2-4) outscored Roanoke Valley Christian 12-4 in the second quarter to take a 22-16 lead at halftime. Gina Guthrie had 18 points and 12 rebounds for Roanoke Valley Christian (5-1).
