The Norfolk Southern Foundation recently donated $5,000 to the Bogardus Project, the YWCA of the Roanoke Valley's proposed child care center.

The YWCA will build the facility next to its central center in downtown Roanoke on land donated by Appalachian Power Company. The YWCA also has received $33,000 in contributions from individuals and board members, and in-kind gifts from Hill Studio, a Roanoke architectural firm that donated more than $9,000 worth of services; and the Junior League of the Roanoke Valley, which has underwritten an ongoing promotional project with gifts totalling $1,500 to date.

The Roanoke Division of First Union National Bank has committed $50,000, the largest corporate contribution to date, to the Roanoke school system's Partners For SUCCESS program.

The bank already has donated $5,000, and Superintendent E. Wayne Harris said the $50,000, "brings us almost to the half-way mark of the $300,000 needed to ensure the tuition support for the first SUCCESS class of 65 students."

The Virginia Council of Nurse Practitioners has awarded six grants of $1,000 each to Womens' Shelters around the state. The Southwest Regional VCNP is matching the state grant for grants to grants to The Turning Point Shelter in Roanoke.
