DISPLAY FEVER ATTRACTS 53

Even before the judges had selected all the winners, Roanoke's Laban Johnson already had come up with a new category for next year's Festival of Lights: a lot of lights.

A Festival of Lights Commission to coordinate future activities also has been organized.

Johnson, the city's special events coordinator, was the man promoting the contest sponsored by the local governments in the Roanoke Valley, the Neighbors section of The Roanoke Times and the Roanoke Valley Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The bottom line, he said, "is we really want visitors to come to Roanoke to shop and look around and enjoy our wonderful valley."

While visiting the 53 entries, contest judges, representing the sponsors, were looking for creativity, originality - "somebody who had not just gone to Kmart " and bought figures, Johnson said

"We were thrilled to death. We saw some wonderful things and some really creative things. It was not just a lot of lights, but the fact that people took creative ideas and did something with them."
