Ewald-Clark Inc., a Roanoke-based retailer of cameras and other photography equipment, said Wednesday that it has purchased Bedford Photo Finishers.
This will be the sixth location for the company, which has four stores in Roanoke and one in Salem.
Ewald-Clark bought the Bedford business from Allen Huddleston, who founded it in 1949, and will take over operations Jan. 1. Terms of the sale were not disclosed.
"We're not going to dramatically change either the building or the nature of the business," said Frank Ewald, who with his brother Gordon has operated Ewald-Clark since 1991. Their father, F.H. Ewald, started the business in 1949.
After the Ewalds take over, Huddleston will continue to work at the store during a transition period. The shop will be run by two current Ewald-Clark employees who live in Bedford.
Ewald said Ewald-Clark plans to devote half of the 1,500-square-foot building to the photo shop and lease the remainder. If the business expands, he said, Ewald-Clark eventually may occupy the entire space.
The shop will offer one-hour photo processing and will sell photography supplies and a limited inventory of cameras.
The company plans a seventh store, to be located somewhere within an hour's drive of Roanoke, but it likely won't materialize for at least a year, he said.
