THE TERRIERS SENIOR scores 35 points to surpass 1,000 for his basketball career in a 60-49 victory over visiting Blacksburg.
Chris Childress of William Byrd pretty much staged a one-man Christmas parade as the Terriers marched past Blacksburg for a 60-49 non-district high school basketball victory Wednesday night at the Terriers' gym.
The particulars from the 6-foot-3 senior wing included a career-high 35 points to go with six rebounds. Childress made 13 of 19 shots from the floor and nine of 13 from the free-throw line. In so doing, he recorded the 1,000th point of his career and now has 1,033.
Childress pumped in 13 of his points in the third quarter as the Terriers (5-0) bounced back from a one-point halftime deficit to take the lead for good.
Childress was well-rested for a second-half charge. He had sat for about four minutes of the second quarter because of foul troubles. During that stretch, the Indians (1-4) switched to a zone defense and ended up outscoring the Terriers 15-8 during the quarter.
Blacksburg couldn't hold on in part because of a poor shooting touch at the free-throw line. Blacksburg would miss nine of 14 foul shots. Byrd made 15 of 24 free throws, with Childress hitting all six of his.
Philip Klaus led the Indians with 17 points and seven rebounds.
Childress was Byrd's only double-figure scorer. It was the third time in five games he has scored more than 30 points. For the season, he is averaging 29 points per game.
Byrd does not play again until it meets Patrick Henry in the first game of the opening round of the NationsBank Holiday Hoops Classic on Dec.26 at the Salem Civic Center.
Blacksburg was coming off its first victory of the season, a 66-36 hammering of Lord Botetourt on Tuesday. The Indians did not make a 3-point shot against Byrd.
