CHEEK, Gregory Scott, 31, of Bedford, passed away Tuesday, December 19, 1995, in the Community Hospital of Roanoke Valley. He was born October 2, 1964 in Bedford County, a son of Bobby R. Cheek and Shirley P. Cheek of Goode. He was a carpenter with Don Sparks Movers. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Lou P. Farley and his paternal grandfather, Clarence W. Cheek. In addition to his mother and father, he is survived by a son, Gregory Scott Cheek, Jr., Evington; a brother and sister-in-law, Troy and Regina Cheek, Bedford; paternal grandmother, Hettie S. Cheek, Bedford; maternal grandfather, Raymond Farley, Bedford. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, December 22, 1995 at 2 p.m. from the Updike Funeral Chapel, Bedford, by the Rev. Floyd Gross and Dr. Michael DuVal. Interment will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery. FRALIN, Melvin Jr., (``Candy Man""), 60, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, December 19, 1995. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Air Force and employed at General Electric in Salem. Survivors include his wife, Bertha Murdock Fralin; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Elder Alvin and Juanettia Murdock and Melvin Lee Fralin; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Racheal and Dennis Staples, Kathy Murdock, Janice and Minister Glenn Billingsley and Darlene Fralin; brother and sister-in-law, James and Ruth Jefferson; two aunts, Claude Fralin and Gloria Turner all of Roanoke; 32 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. HUSAW, Henry Sr., of Rte. 2 Box 182, Buchanan, died Monday, December 18, 1995 at his residence. Born in Amherst County he was the s on of the late Mrs. Lucy Johnson. His wife is Mrs. Maria Spinner Husaw. In addition to his wife, he is survived by four sons and their spouses, Henry L. Husaw and his wife Dorothy of Buchanan, William Husaw of Lynchburg, David Husaw and his wife Patsy of Lexington, and Robert Husaw of Maryland; four sisters-in-law, Catherine Scott, Helen Spinner, and Mary Spinner all of Big Island, and Gertrude Spinner of Lynchburg; four brothers-in-law, Sandy Spinner, Albert Scott, and Earl Spinner all of Big Island, and Clifton Spinner of Lynchburg; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Carl B. Hutcherson Funeral Home, Rev. L. S. Otey officiating, with interment in the Baptist Cemetery. The cortege will assemble at the residence of Mrs. Rebecca Hamilton, Rte. 1 Big Island. Services are entrusted to the care of Carl B. Hutcherson Funeral Home.
JACKSON, Marilyn Russell Fulton, 77, of Ballard, W.Va., died Tuesday, December 19, 1995, in a Princeton hospital. Born on March 29, 1918, in Cochran, Ga., she was the daughter of Carrie Mae Taylor Fulton of Savannah, Ga., and the late Paul Russell Fulton. Mrs. Jackson was a resident of Ballard for the past six years, and had served as a fire monitor for the Ballard Volunteer Fire Department. A 50-year-resident of Atlanta, Ga., she was founder and former owner of Jackson and Associates Market Research Firm. She was a life member of the United Methodist Church of Cochran. She was preceded in death by her husband, Guy Delacy Jackson Jr.; two sons, and one brother. Additional survivors include two sons, Guy D. Jackson IV of Marietta, Ga., and Paul F. Jackson of Destin, Fla.; one daughter, Mrs. Tommy (Merri) Hess of Ballard; two sisters, Ann Peacock of Columbia, S.C., and Carol Douglas of Savannah; a sister-in-law, Marian Dykes of Atlanta; 10 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, December 22, at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Cochran. Glassman and Katherine Mitchell; a brother, James T. Hannah; and several nieces and nephews. McCLEASE, Percy Sr., 70, of Montvale, passed away Tuesday, December 19, 1995. He served in the United States Army and was retired from the W. W. Boxley Stone Co. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rachel McClease. Survivors include five daughters, Barbara A. McClease, Queens, N.Y., Rosa L. McClease, Montvale, Gloria E. Candace, Roanoke, Brenda A. Jackson, Lynchburg, and Darlene McClease, Montvale; three sons, Percy McClease Jr., Roanoke, Marvin L. McClease, Houston, Texas, and Terry W. MITCHELL, Dorothy Christine Martin, 77, of Our Lady of the Valley, Roanoke, died Tuesday, December 19, 1995. Mrs. Mitchell was the widow of Calvin Mitchell and also was prece ded in death by her parents, Rudolph Thomas and Rosa Terrell Sharpe Martin and two sisters, Virginia Martin Smoot and Helen Martin Proffitt. Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Carroll T. and Linda Bourke Mitchell of Troutville; two grandchildren, Carroll Thomas Mitchell II and Kathryn Lisa Mitchell both of Troutville; a brother, Calvin T. Martin of Monroe; three nephews, Calvin Thomas Martin II of Monroe, Louis B. Proffitt II of Ruckersville and Willis Milton Smoot II of Sweet Briar. MUNSEY, Robert Leslie, 85, of Pearisburg, died Wednesday, December 10, 1995 in a Pearisburg hospital. He was born December 29, 1909 at Pearisburg, the son of the late Shirley C leveland and Virginia Gott Munsey. He was a retired mechanic at the Virginia Garage and Giles County School Board Garage and a veteran of WW II. He is survived by his wife, Pearley Hammons Munsey; two sons, Robert (Bucky) Munsey, Pearisburg; Joe L. Munsey, Peterstown, W.Va.; one sister, Mary Frances Lucas, Petersburg; five grandchildren, Melissa Danielle Munsey, Robert C. (Bobby) Munsey, Scott Munsey, Tony Munsey, Joshua Z. Munsey; one great-grandson, Robert Kelley Munsey. Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Shahn Wilburn officiating. NICHOLS, Maggie Peters, 93, of Floyd, died Wednesday, December 20, 1995, in a Roanoke hospital. RILEY, Claudia Davis, 75, of Route 1, Narrows, died Tuesday, December 19, 1995 in the Giles Memorial Hosptial Pearisburg. A lifelong resident of Giles County, she was born on October 21, 1920 and was the daughter of the late Chelcie Hampton and Pansy Leoria Perdue Davis. She was a member of the Church of Christ at Glen Lyn, Va. She was a member of the Ladies Bible Class and served as an Assistant Sunday School teacher. She was a member of the Young at Heart Group at the church. She is survived by three sons, Jerry D. Steele, Virginia Beach, Roger H. Dillon, Wakefield, Michael K. Riley, Lurich; sister, Mae (Tootie) Thomas of Lurich; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, in the Chapel of Riffe's Funeral Service in Narrows with Ministers Mike Lynn and Tony Reed officiating. ROLLER, John B., Jr., 75, of Pearisburg, died Wednesday, December 20, 1995, in Heritage Hall, Blacksburg. Mr. Roller was a graduate of VPI, Class of 1942, and was known as the Yellow Sweater Man. Mr. Roller was a veteran of World War II. John served his country in the European Theater from 1942 to 1945. Capt. Roller was the recipient of two Purple Hearts and three Silver Stars for his gallantry to his country and the men of the 2nd Armored Division. After retiring to the U. S., Mr. Roller began a long career as a businessman, civic servant and community leader. He owned and operated Roller Floral Company in Pearisburg for 41 years and White Horse Antiques in Narrows for 27 years. For 36 years, Mr. Roller served the Town of Pearisburg as a Councilman. He also distinguished himself through the unselfish giving of over 18 gallons of blood to the American Red Cross. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Fay Jordan Roller of Pearisburg; three sons and two daughters-in-law, John B. Roller III of Oakland, Calif., Roger and Ester Roller of Forest, and Robert and Julie Roller of Louisville, Ky.; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Margaret and Dave Whitehead of Scottsboro, Ala.; two grandsons, Roger Roller Jr. of Forest and Brad Roller of Louisville, and four granddaughters, Sarah Whitehead and Betsy Whitehead of Scottsboro, and Rachel Roller and Sarah Roller of Forest. Mr. Roller was a lifelong member of the Pearisburg Baptist Church, where funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, with the Revs. Roger Roller, Charles Addington and Bob Thornton officiating. Interment will be in Birchlawn Burial Park, with military honors by the Narrows American Legion Post #6 8, Pembroke American Legion Post #311 and Narrows V.F.W. Post #6000 officiating. The family will receive friends at the Givens Funeral Home, Pearisburg, from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday.
SAMPLES, Porter Franklin, 82, of Roanoke, went home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, December 20, 1995 in a local hospital. He was a graduate of Michigan State University and a retired Landscape Architect with Hercules. Mr. Samples was a member of South Roanoke United Methodist Church, the Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite, the Shrine Temple and the B.P.O.E. Elks Club. He was also a member of the A.S.L.A. and the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mrs. Mabel P. Samples of Roanoke; three daughters, Patricia Simmons of Tennessee, Susan LeGard of Roanoke and Jacqueline Singleton of Waynesboro; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild; three sisters, Freda Milam of Charleston, W.Va., Doris Walker of Florida and Pauline Hayzlett of Richmond. Funeral services will be held at Oakey's South Chapel, 10:30 a.m. Friday with Dr. Donald H. Roberts officiating. A Masonic Memorial Service will be conducted following the funeral service. SHORES, Cora Lee Gambill, 89, of Christiansburg, died Tuesday, December 19, 1995 in Richfield Nursing Center, Salem. She was born December 21, 1905, the daughter of the late Samuel Oscar and Cornelia Taylor Gambill. She was preceded in death by her husband, D.C. Shores and a sister, Eula Mae Parker. Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Frederick (Sonny) and Carol Shores, Christiansburg; three grandchildren, Jim Shores and wife, Vickie, Alexandria, Vicki Perkins and husband, Stan, Christiansburg, Michele Gerhard and husband, Craig, Arlington, Texas; two great-grandchildren, Daniel and Laura Shores; two sisters, Letha Osborne, Mouth-of-Wilson, Gena Sue Marshall, Roanoke; one brother, Oscar Gambill Jr., Sparta, N.C.
