THE TIPOFF

TWICE AS NICE: Get that warm-and-fuzzy feeling from 9 to 11 tonight as the Caylor Sisters add their special sounds to the already cozy atmosphere of the Third Street Coffeehouse. The sisters, 18-year-old twins, whose cassette singles have been well-received regionally, will combine folk, contemporary Christian and Christmas music. An open mike from 7:30-8:45 p.m. precedes the sisters' performance. Admission is free to the event on the lower level of Trinity Methodist Church (Third Street and Mountain Avenue, Southwest). However, donations will be accepted. Call 774-5342.

CRECHE CARAVAN: Bring candles, flashlights or lanterns - and your best voice - to join the caroling tonight as Mary and Joseph, shepherds and the three wise men lead you on a journey from several Grandin Road area churches to Bethlehem. Gather at 6:30 at Christ Lutheran Church, Raleigh Court United Methodist Church and Virginia Heights Baptist Church to begin the trip to the stable and a Christmas play at Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church.

MATTER OF PRINCIPLES: Kwanzaa will be the cause for celebration at the Harrison Museum of African American Culture on Thursday from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The holiday - based on principles of unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith - was created in 1966 by Maulana "Ron" Karenga. Its observance includes giving thanks for the fruits of the year's labors; evaluating achievements and contributions to family and community; and laying plans and setting goals for the upcoming year. The museum's free program will include music, family activities and a Kwanzaa guide. African or red, black and green attire is encouraged but not required. Call 345-4818.

HOOP HOPES: Teams from William Byrd, William Fleming, Glenvar, Patrick Henry, Northside, Salem, Franklin County and Durham, N.C.'s Riverside High Schools will hit the hoops at the Salem Civic Center on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in the NationsBank Holiday Hoops Basketball Tournament. Games will be played each day at 2 p.m., 3:45 p.m., 6 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. Tickets cost $5 per day for adults; $4 for students; or tournament passes cost $12 for adults and $10 for students. Call 387-2437.

SKI SPREE: Spend the weekend of Jan. 5 -7 with the Roanoke Ski Club enjoying that white Christmas residue at Snowshoe/Silvercreek. The $156 cost includes two nights' double-occupancy lodging; ski-in/ski-out condos and two lift tickets. A $78 deposit is required. Call Martha Lacy at 345-3414.
