A regional National History Day competition will be held March 30 at Emory & Henry College, its theme this year being "Taking A Stand in History."
Students who place first or second in the various categories will be eligible for state competition May 11 at the University of Virginia. State winners advance to national competition June 9-13 at the University of Maryland.
Emory & Henry is joining the Virginia Society of History Teachers in co-sponsoring the competition in the region including 12 Southwest Virginia counties. Competition is open to students in grades 6-12, with separate categories for grades 6-8 and 9-12.
In each division, there are seven contest categories for individual and group projects. The projects range from traditional written papers to dramatic performances and even presentations using electronic media.
This year's categories are individual history paper, individual project, individual performance, individual media presentation, group project, group performance and group media presentation. Forms and detailed information are available by writing John Roper, the Emory & Henry history professor acting as district coordinator, or Thomas Little, assistant professor.
Pre-registration forms must be completed by March 18.
