The Federal Election Commission has dismissed a 1994 election-eve complaint lodged by Republicans against the campaigns of U.S. Sen. Charles Robb, D-Va., and Rep. James Moran, D-Alexandria.
The commission announced last week that it had dismissed more than 30 cases - including the one involving Robb and Moran - that its staff deemed low priority and unworthy of further pursuit.
The National Republican Senatorial Committee had accused the Virginia Democrats' campaigns of violating federal election law.
Republicans cited a Moran direct-mail letter that also urged support for Robb, and a Moran television ad criticizing both Moran's opponent, Kyle McSlarrow, and Oliver North, Robb's Republican opponent.
The Republican committee contended that the Moran campaign overstepped spending limits, and the Robb campaign exceeded contribution limits. Democrats said they had not violated the law and noted accounting and reporting measures for support.
