Citicorp considers moving out of N.Y.

NEW YORK - Citicorp, the nation's largest financial institution with a name and history etched into New York, is seriously considering moving its headquarters out of Manhattan.

Chairman John Reed is thinking about picking up the bank's roots - planted in New York 183 years ago - because he believes the financial center has too much of a corporate atmosphere and big-money mentality for a global consumer bank, said spokesman Jack Morris.

With its emphasis on any-time, anywhere services, Reed believes Citicorp would be better off near a technology center such as northern California's Silicon Valley or Boston, Morris said. The bank considered Reston, Va., but ruled it out because it might make people think Citicorp is a Washington bank.

Citicorp is one of New York's largest employers, with more than 20,000 workers at its headquarters and branches.
