Roanoker wins scholarship pageant
Kelly Orr of Roanoke was recently crowned Miss Botetourt Scholarship Festival 1996 at a pageant at Lord Botetourt High School. Orr, daughter of Tom and Carol Orr and a junior history major at Roanoke College, won a $750 scholarship. She will participate in the 1996 Miss Virginia Pageant at the Roanoke Civic Center in June.
The finalists at the pageant included Courtney Kiehl, daughter of Charles Kiehl and Kathleen McClure, first runner-up; Jennifer Waddell, daughter of Mark and Debra Waddell, second runner-up; and Tara Duus, daughter of Charles and Joan Duus, third runner-up.
Air Force Grassroots Program Saturday
The United States Air Force Academy will sponsor an Air Force Grassroots Program Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Roanoke Airport Holiday Inn. The program is an informational program for students considering the academy and their parents.
Cadets from Southwest Virginia who are home for the holidays will discuss academy appointments and campus life and answer any questions for prospective students.

Roanoke leaf collection continues
Roanoke workers will begin collecting loose leaves beginning Monday in zone 3H Southwest and continue to collect leaves in several unfinished zones.
Residents are asked to rake leaves to the curb by Monday morning.
To verify residential zones, maps are available at all city libraries and fire stations or check the back page of the Nov. 3 edition of Neighbors.

Entries sought for MDA car show
The Roanoke Valley Charity Car Show Committee is accepting entries for its 16th annual MDA Car Show to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
The Feb. 23-25 show at the Roanoke Civic Center will include custom cars, street rods, race cars, antiques and classics, pro-streets, motorcycles, pickups, muscle cars, four-wheel drives, off-road vehicles and vans.
There is no entry fee, but commercial booths will be available. Call the MDA office, 772-3237, for applications.
Salem to hold annual spay/neuter day
The Salem Animal Control Division is seeking funds for its second annual Spay/Neuter Day on Feb. 27, 1996.
Donations and registration of pets to be treated will be accepted until Jan. 31, 1996. All pets to be registered must be up-to-date on shots. A health record also must be presented before spay/neuter certificates will be issued. The division will treat only one pet per household.

Volunteers needed for Tax Aide program
Tax Aide, a program sponsored by the American Association of Retired Persons and the Internal Revenue Service, seeks volunteers to provide free assistance to senior citizens preparing tax returns.
Volunteers should have properly completed and filed their own tax returns for the last two years, be comfortable working with numbers and enjoy working with people.
Training that emphasizes tax items affecting older people will be provided beginning in December.
