Cave Spring held Fluvanna County to one field goal in the second quarter, breaking a first-quarter tie as the Knights rolled past the Flying Flucos 52-35 in a boys' high school basketball game Wednesday in the round robin Albemarle Invitational in Charlottesville.
Using a full-court press, Cave Spring (5-3) stepped up the defensive intensity to crush Fluvanna. It was the second time this season the Knights have put a one-quarter choke-hold on an opponent. They held Salem scoreless in the third period a week ago.
Junior post player Alex Phillips led Cave Spring in the first half, scoring all of his 13 points Seniors Jeff Lang and Billy Frantz combined for nine points in the period as well.
Lang finished the night with 18 points, keeping up with his team-leading average.
Cave Spring will take on host Albemarle at 9 tonightat Albemarle following the 3-point and slam-dunk competitions.
Roanoke Catholic 52, Pocahontas 42: The Celtics jumped out to an early lead and held on to beat Pocahontas in the Xpress Market Christmas Tournament in Floyd.
Alex Dickson led Roanoke Catholic with 19 points and teammate Brandon McCarthy chipped in 11.
Girls
Cave Spring 57, Milbrook (N.C.) 45: Cheryl Rhodes and Jaclyn Banks keyed a second-quarter run to give the Knights (4-1) a victory in the Chapel Hill (N.C.) Christmas Invitational at Chapel Hill High School.
Rhodes and Banks combined for 14 points during a 20-9 run to give Cave Spring (4-1) a 27-16 halftime lead. Rhodes finished with 16 points, Banks 11.
Cave Spring plays the Durham Academy-Lee County winner today at 6:30 p.m. Millbrook is 3-5.
