Sophomore Travis Cantrell poured in 31 points, nine in overtime, as Floyd County defeated Carlisle 95-93 Wednesday night in the Xpress Market Christmas Tournament in Floyd.

Cantrell sent the game into overtime with a 3-pointer with 18 seconds left, then made a layup following a Carlisle turnover with five seconds remaining. Cantrell was 17-of-19 from the line on the evening.

Carlisle coach Jeff Adkins got two technical fouls to begin the overtime period and the Buffaloes led the entire extra period. Carlisle made a 3-pointer to end the extra frame.

Sophomore Jason Dalton added 19 for Floyd and Derek Saunders added 20 points and 17 rebounds.

Lamont Franklin scored 28 points and Marty Stanley added 21 for Carlisle (6-1). Joseph McClinton added 19 and Bryant Redd 14. The Buffaloes improve to 5-1 on the season.

Roanoke Catholic 52, Pocahontas 42: The Celtics jumped out to an early lead and held on to beat Pocahontas in the Xpress Market Christmas Tournament in Floyd.

Alex Dickson led Roanoke Catholic with 19 points and teammate Brandon McCarthy chipped in 11. David Murphy's 19 led the way for Pocahontas.

Cave Spring 52, Fluvanna 35: Cave Spring held Fluvanna County to only a field goal in the second quarter, breaking a first quarter tie as the Knights rolled past the Flying Flucos in the round robin Albemarle Invitational in Charlottesville.

Using a full-court press, Cave Spring (5-3) stepped up the defensive intensity to crush Fluvanna. It was the second time this season the Knights have held a team to minimal points in a quarter. They held Salem scoreless in the third period a week ago.

Junior post player Alex Phillips led Cave Spring in the first half, scoring all of his 13 points. Eight points of his first half scoring barrage came in the second quarter. Seniors Jeff Lang and Billy Frantz combined for nine points in the period as well.

Lang finished the night with 18 points, keeping up with his team-leading average. Lang sank three 3-pointers, a game high. Frantz finished with six points.

Travis Washington led Fluvanna with 13 points in the losing effort.

Cave Spring will take on host Albemarle at 9 tonight at Albemarle following the 3-point and slam-dunk competitions.

Radford 74, Bland 60: The Bobcats jumped out to a 12-2 lead to begin the game and held off the Rockets in a non-district tilt in Radford.

Bland (1-2) had trouble with Radford's pressure defense early in the contest. The Rockets then settled in and cut the Bobcats' (2-2) lead to seven late in the third quarter.

Radford led by as many as 21 points in the game. The Bobcats were led by John Robertson's 23 points and Larnell Lewis' 18 points and eight rebounds. Derric Chapman chipped in 12 points.

Bland was led by John Thompson's 17 points, while Jon Newberry added 12 and Lee Meadows 10.

Bath County 73, Alleghany 53: In Hot Springs, Bath County jumped out to a 38-16 lead at the half and never looked back as the Chargers rolled past area rival Alleghany for the first time since the early 1970s.

The rivalry between Group A Bath County and Group AA Alleghany took an almost 20-year hiatus before resuming last season. The Mountaineers claimed both games last season.

The Chargers (5-0) exploded to a 16-9 lead in the first quarter and pushed their advantage to 22 points in the second period.

Matt Williams led Bath County in scoring with 15. Stewart Alexander poured in 14, including two 3-pointers. Jon Rodgers and David Buzzard each chipped in 11. Rodgers also grabbed six rebounds and dished out three assists.

The Mountaineers (1-5), who have lost three straight, were led by Kevin Cook's 13-point performance, including three 3-pointers. Casey Burks chipped in 11 and Ryan Crackel had 10.

Girls

Pulaski County 60, Hayfield 56: The Cougars turned around their fortunes in overtime to advance in the Bookjammin '95 tournament at George Mason University in Fairfax.

Pulaski County (4-2) outscored Hayfield 43-21 in the second half and overtime to compensate for scoring only two points in the first quarter.

The Cougars trailed 35-17 at halftime before switching to a triangle-and-two defense.

The strategy worked, holding Hayfield's leading scorer, Latonia Beale, to only three points in the second half after she had scored 15 in the first half. Pulaski County held Hayfield to only two points in the fourth quarter to force the overtime.

Katrina Williams led the Cougars with 25 points and Mandy Sexton had 13.

Cave Spring 57, Milbrook (N.C.) 45: Cheryl Rhodes and Jaclyn Banks keyed a second-quarter run to give the Knights victory in the Chapel Hill (N.C.) Christmas Invitational at Chapel Hill High School.

Rhodes and Banks combined for 14 points during a 20-9 run to give Cave Spring (4-1) a 27-16 halftime lead. Rhodes finished with 16 points, Banks 11.

Cave Spring plays the Durham Academy-Lee County winner today at 6:30 p.m. Millbrook is 3-5.
