THE TIPOFF

YOUTHFUL PURSUITS: Saturday from 7-11 p.m., the Central YMCA in downtown Roanoke will be the site of a sports-filled night for kids in grades 6 through 12. The activities offered will include basketball, volleyball, racquetball, swimming (bring a towel) and board games. Admission is $3.

The YMCA is located at 425 Church Ave., Roanoke. For more information, call Straight Street at 342-2078.

LAST LAUGH: Ring out the old year and ring in the new with chuckles, snickers, snorts, guffaws and other uncouth utterings brought about by the outrageous antics of popular funny man Carrot Top on Sunday night at 9 in the Salem Civic Center.

The red-haired cut-up's kudos include College Comedian of the Year and Best Stand-Up Comedian American Comedy Awards.

Tickets are $22.50. Call 375-3004 or 343-8100.

THE RIDE STUFF: Start the cycle of the new year on a bicycle at noon Monday in the Big Lick HillBillies' sixth annual 1st Ride O' the New Year!

Convene at Carvin's Cove main boat dock parking lot a little before noon. Take Reservoir Road off of route 11 (the Lee Highway) in Hollins (near Pepsi). This road leads directly to the parking lot.

The longest ride will be 23 miles, circumnavigating the cove, but shorter, self-guided rides are possible. All riders must wear helmets. For more information, call Kyle at 981-1034.

BASKETS AND BONES: In case you didn't get them for holiday gifts, here's your chance to win a Detroit Pistons hat autographed by Grant Hill; an L.A. Lakers hat autographed by Jerry West; a Charlotte Hornets jersey autographed by Muggsy Bogues and other coveted items, plus have lots of fun and benefit the American Cancer Society and the Jimmy V Foundation for Cancer Research.

The Domino's/Lewis-Gale Classic Basketball Tournament at Roanoke College's Bast Center will on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. pit Jersey City State (N.J.) against Menlo College (Calif.), and at 7:30 p.m. Roanoke College will play against Gettysburg (Pa.).

On Thursday, between the consolation game, starting at 5:30 p.m., and the big championship at 7:30 p.m., Roanoke Valley physicians and lawyers - billing themselves as the Jawbones and Sawbones - will engage in a (mercifully?) quick exhibition.

Admission costs $6 in advance for both events or $4 per night at the door. For information, call 344-8699 or 776-4160.
