READERS BRISTLING WITH THEORIES

Becky Mushko, an English and drama teacher in Roanoke, faxed The Roanoke Times this set of possible explanations for the toothbrushes at the Rockbridge County Courthouse. It includes a playful swipe at the giant mesh-like statue of a judge in the lobby of the Roanoke Courthouse. It also includes many of the puns that other readers called or wrote in about - along with one final pun that apparently nobody else had thought of.

Why are they there?

1: Perhaps someone wanted to create art that is more tasteful and practical than the hunk of chicken wire in the Roanoke Courthouse.

2: Perhaps it's a message to our legislators to make laws with more teeth in them.

3: Perhaps it's a message to lawyers to brush up on their legal skills.

4: Perhaps it's a message to authorities who want to take a bite out of crime, not to forget to brush their teeth afterwards.

5: Perhaps it's a message for those appearing in court to "tell the tooth, the whole tooth, and nothing but the tooth."
