SUNDAY NIGHT'S the night: First Night 5, the New Year's Eve celebration of 100 attractions.

More than 100, actually, and they range from jazz and poetry slams to child's play and (heaven forbid!) some kind of fitness course. That's how wholesome this nonalcoholic celebration is.

But don't let that keep you out of downtown. Judging by its continuing growth, the Roanoke revel ushering in the new year is not only safe, responsible and family-oriented, it's fun.

A great tradition seems well under way in Roanoke.
