If you get caught running a red light on Jan. 1, expect to pay more than double the current fine for the offense.
The change - from $20 to $50 - was enacted by the Virginia General Assembly this year along with other increased fines for traffic infractions that occur most often, such as failure to yield right of way, running a stop sign and not having an up-to-date inspection sticker.
The new fines go into effect after midnight Sunday. Anyone cited for a violation before Jan. 1 will pay 1995 fees regardless of court date.
Except for running a red light, the other fines will increase by $10, most from $20 to $30.
Fines for speeding, failure to use a seat belt, and child restraint violations were not increased.
The General Assembly enacts traffic fine legislation, and, historically, cities, counties and towns in Virginia have revised local ordinances accordingly.
