Nelson Bond, the Roanoke Valley author whose last science fiction/fantasy story appeared in the March, 1954, issue of Blue Book magazine, now has a new one out.
The latest is "Pipeline to Paradise," published in a paperback collection of far-out gambling tales titled "Wheel of Fortune." It was edited by the late Roger Zelazny, and was one of his last projects before his death last June.
In his introduction to the story, Zelazny wrote that he remembered reading Bond's stories in the 1940s. "But for many years he has been retired, enjoying his antiquarian book dealership and playing bridge in Roanoke," Zelazny said. "I came along and pestered him for a story for this book - so relentlessly that he finally wrote me one to restore peace to his world. I am very grateful, and it is a pleasure to bring you a story from a gentleman I have long admired."
Bond moved to writing for movies and television when the magazine market for short stories began to dry up, before he left writing altogether. In recent years, he has been elected by early science-fiction fans to the First Fandom Hall of Fame.
"Wheel of Fortune" was published in December by Avon Books.
