Sherry Banks drained back-to-back 3-pointers with less than three minutes remaining to break a tie and lead Virginia Tech to a 70-59 victory over Campbell and the championship of the Diamond Club Classic in Blacksburg.
Banks, a former William Byrd High School star, finished with a game-high 18 points and was named the tournament's most valuable player. She was joined on the all-tournament squad by teammate Michelle Hollister, who had 13 points and seven rebounds for the Hokies (2-6). Felecia Autry and Beth Stockwell of Campbell also made the team, along with Dana Gould of Lafayette and Lajaiah Miles of Hampton.
Campbell (3-3) was led by former Lord Botetourt High School standout Ashley Moore, who scored 14 points, grabbed eight rebounds and had two assists. Autry and Stockwell also had 14 points each.
In the consolation game, Hampton downed Lafayette 80-71 behind Miles' 16 points and 11 rebounds.
In another game:
Radford 82, Cornell 71: The Highlanders finished their seven-game road trip with a victory over the Big Red and a third-place finish at the State Farm Bearcat Invitational in Cincinnati.
Radford (3-7) was led by former Bassett High School standout Kim Hairston and Lisa Howard, who each poured in 23 points. Hairston also had five assists and seven boards.
Cornell (2-5) was paced by Kim Ruck, who had 23 points, five assists and eight rebounds.
Friday's game
No. 6 Virginia 77, UCLA 55: The Cavaliers needed to make a major adjustment after they embarrassed themselves in the first half against the Bruins in Los Angeles.
Tora Suber scored five of her 17 points to start the second half, and UVa went on to rout UCLA in the second game of the Pac-10/ACC Challenge.
Southern Cal defeated Maryland 68-62 in the first game at Pauley Pavilion.
``It became more of a pride factor in order to gain back some respect after putting up so many bad shots in the first half,'' Cavaliers coach Debbie Ryan said after her team shot 8-for-31 in the first half.
Suber keyed a decisive 18-2 run by scoring the first five points on a 3-pointer and a layup after a steal to snap a 47-all tie with 9:45 remaining.
UVa (7-2) increased its lead to 65-49 with 6:20 to play and put the game out of reach.
