A 34-year-old Roanoke woman reported missing Friday night was found dead about 3:20 p.m. Saturday in a car abandoned in the 4200 block of Peach Tree Drive Northwest.
According to a Roanoke police news release, a woman called police just before 10:30 p.m. Friday and reported that Vickie Shantella Ross, of the 5200 block of Lancelot Lane Northwest, was not at her apartment. The woman, who identified herself as Ross' friend, said she had planned to pick up Ross to go to a party.
When she arrived at Ross' apartment, she saw a man leaving in Ross' car. The friend identified the man as Bryant Ross, Vickie Ross' estranged husband. She tried to stop him, but he drove away.
The friend followed the car to Salem where she lost track of it, police said.
She then returned to Ross' apartment and talked to police officers.
There, police said they found what appeared to be blood in two areas outside the apartment. They also found what they said appeared to be blood in the bathroom.
The vehicle in which Bryant Ross drove off, police said, actually belonged to Vickie Ross' mother, who told police that Bryant Ross did not have permission to drive her car.
Based on that information, police obtained a warrant for Bryant Ross for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
Just hours later, Vickie Ross' body was found in the back seat of her mother's abandoned car.
A warrant based on the discovery of her body had not been issued as of 9 p.m. Saturday.
