ARMSTRONG, Daisy Ann, 61, of Thaxton, died Friday, December 29, 1995. She is survived by a son, John Mark Armstrong of Montvale; a sister, Dorothy Caldwell of Roanoke; three brothers, Clarence Thomas, Lusby Thomas and Bernard Thomas of Eagle Rock; her stepfather, Russell A. Horton of Clifton Forge, and four grandchildren, Donald Oliver Armstrong III, Amber Lynn Armstrong, Brandon Hunter Armstrong and Trea Oliver Armstrong. BACON, Louise Najjum, 89, of Botetourt County, passed away Friday evening, December 29, 1995 in Melbourne, Fla. She was the widow of Lee Bacon and a member of St. Andrews Catholic Church. Surviving are a brother and sister-in-law, Joseph and Audrey Najjum, Botetourt County; a sister, Ethel Gresham, Melbourne, Fla.; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday from Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, with the Rev. James M. Fosnot officiating. Interment will follow in St. Andrews Diocesan Cemetery. She was born in Wythe County on March 19, 1920, the daughter of the late Samuel Bowles and Emma Smith Bowles Kirby. She is survived by one son, Gilbert Beckner of Roanoke; one sister, Lois Morgan of Napierville, Ill., and one brother, Howard Kirby of Cherry Hill, N.J. DENTON, Wayland Beecher, Jr., 84, died Friday, December 29, 1995, at Brookridge Retirement Community in Winston-Salem, N.C. Better known as Jack, Mr. Denton was born in Lawndale, N.C., on January 15, 1911. After graduating from Piedmont High School, he went to work in Charlotte for Pender Grocery and was later transferred to Lynchburg. Professionally, he was best known for being the County Office Manager for the Bedford County ABCS of the U. S. Department of Agriculture in Bedford for 32 years. He retired in the early 1970s, and was an active member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees for many years. Mr. Denton was a member of the Bedford Baptist Church from 1940 until shortly before his death. He served the church in many capacities, including the Board of Deacons, as superintendent of the Sunday School and as chairman of the Benevolence Committee. Mr. Denton is survived by his wife of 62 years, Dorothy Ware Denton, who currently resides at Brookridge in Winston-Salem. He also is survived by four children, Ann Ryder of Winston-Salem, Sandra Fischel of Collowhee, N.C., Wayland B. Denton III of Concord, N.C., and James B. Denton of Plano, Texas. Surviving also are eight grandchildren, Richard W. Ryder, Gregory R. Ryder, Jonathan Denton, Ryan Denton, Cathy Denton, Andrew Denton, Wayland Beecher Denton IV and G. Nichols Denton; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Fred Denton of Lawndale, N.C., and numerous nieces and nephews. Updike Funeral Home, Bedford, Va., is in charge of arrangements. The funeral service is at 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 2, at the Bedfo rd Baptist Church. Graveside services will follow in Longwood Cemetery. EPPERLEY, Tracy Lynn, 24, of Highland Road, Dublin, died Friday, December 29, 1995 at her home. She was born in Pulaski, Va. on May 21, 1971. She was a former employee of Renfro Corp., Pulaski, Va. FANNING, William Marvin, 75, of Route #1, Narrows, died Saturday, December 30, 1995 in the Roanoke Memorial Rehab Center. He was born in Bland County on August 8, 1920 and was the son of the late Fred Eldridge and Nettie Robertson Fanning. He was preceded in death by a brother, George F. Fanning. He was a retired employee of the Hoechst/Celanese Fibers Company Plant at Narrows and retired in 1982 after 42 years of service. After his retirement, he was a funeral assistant at Riffe's Funeral Service in Narrows. He was a veteran of World War II. While in the service, he was with the U. S. Marine Corp. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post #6000 of Narrows, and a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Narrows. He is survived by his wife, Maxine Robertson Fanning; a daughter and son-in-law, Hope and Hank Ingram, McLeansville, N.C.; two sisters, Allene Stanley, Bud, W. Va., Alice Kinder, Tannersville; a brother, Aden Eldridge Fanning, Thomasville, N.C.; two grandchildren, Virginia M. Ingram and William R. Ingram, McLeansville, N.C. Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Riffe's Funeral Service, with the Rev. Harry Goodwin officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemeter y in Narrows, with full military rites conducted by the V.F.W. Post #6000 of Narrows. MILLS, Arnold Eugene, 54, of Newport, died Friday, December 29, 1995, at Lewis-Gale Hospital in Salem. Born in Washington, D.C., on February 22, 1941, he was the son of the late Cornelius Paul Mills Sr. and Gertrude Nicholas Mills. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Cornelius Paul Mills Jr. Mr. Mills had been a contract painter for several years, a member of Hunter's Masonic Lodge #156 A.F.&A.M., Ingles Chapter #96 Order of the Eastern Star, New Castle Lions Club and Bethel United Methodist Church in Craig County. Surviving are his wife, Helen Nicodemus Mills; a daughter, Tammy M. Jones and husband Ronnie of Pembroke; a son, E. Todd Mills and wife Kim of Blacksburg; a grandson, Tyler Paul Jones of Pembroke; a sister, Paulette Mills Hughes, and a special friend, Robert Gore of Charlottesville. PLEASANTS, Clarence Grant, 65, of Galveston, Texas, formerly of B rownsburg, Va., died Wednesday, December 27, 1995 at his residence. A son of the late Mr. Hodge and Mrs. Edna Haliburton Pleasants, he was born April 4, 1930 in Brownsburg, Va. He attended the former Lylburn Downing High School in Lexington before serving in the United States Air Force. Mr. Pleasants was a Horticulturist at Moody Gardens and Se-Arama. He was also an author, a teacher and the inspirational founder of the National Oleander Society. Surviving are two brothers, Mr. James L. Pleasants, Steeles Tavern, and Mr. Leo Pleasants, El Paso, Texas; a niece, Mrs. Elizabeth P. Brown, Brownsburg; other relatives in Virginia and in Galveston; and a special friend, Mr. David Carroll of Galveston. The body may be viewed in the Lewis Funeral Home Chapel in Lexington, Wednesday, January 3, 1996, one hour prior to the 2 p.m. funeral service, with Dr. John Fisher, Minister.
