A former Ferrum College basketball player faces murder charges in connection with a drive-by killing.
Quincy Quick, 22, of Petersburg, also is charged with conspiracy to commit robbery and attempted robbery in the Oct. 5 shooting death of Carlos M. Williams.
``We don't think he's the shooter,'' said Petersburg Police Senior Detective Carter W. Burnett. ``We do know he was involved.''
A capital murder warrant is on file for Anthony Thomas, a New York man who is at large.
The killing was drug-related, Burnett said. Williams, 25, of Sutherland, was shot once in the back with a pistol as he was walking in Petersburg, police said.
Quick's lawyer, Joseph D. Morrissey, said Quick is innocent.
Quick has been in the Petersburg Jail in lieu of $75,000 bond since he was arrested Thursday.
Quick, a three-year starting point guard for Ferrum, graduated in 1994, said Gary Holden, the school's sports information director.
Quick also was a standout at Petersburg High School.
