ANDERSON, George Leon, 71, of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, January 3, 1996. He was preceded in death by his wife, Laddie T. Anderson. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Susie and Rex Pagans, Roanoke; grandchildren, Michelle Sheppard and Cheyenne Anderson, Michael Anderson, Cameron Pagans, Marcus Anderson; great-grandchildren, Thomas Sheppard, Coty Dudley and Joshua Dudley. BASHAM, Lucy Belle, 74, of Roanoke, died Monday, January 1, 1996 at her residence. She was a member of Waverly Place Baptist Church, and the widow of Randolph C. Basham. Surviving are a brother, James Melvin Stump, Vinton; and a sister-in-law, Mabel Hartman, Chesapeake. BISHOP, John H. Jr., 67, of Troutdale, passed away Wednesday, January 3, 1996 at Veterans Administration Hospital, Salem. Born November 10, 1928 at Troutdale to John Horton and Eva Greer Bishop. He was a retired U.S. Army Veteran with 22 years service, having served in the Korean Campaign. He was a member of Mouth of Wilson, Va. Masonic Lodge #223, A.F. & A.M. and a member of Independence Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter #89. Surviving include his sister, Hope Pierce, Troutdale; three nephews and wives, Rev. Gregory and Judy Arnold, Troutdale, Ronald and Doris Reedy, Marion, John Pierce, Woodbridge; also several cousins. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, January 6, 1996 in Troutdale Baptist Church with the Rev. Scott Flippin officiating. Interment will be in Fairwood Cemetery. The body will be moved from Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home of Independence to the Troutdale Baptist Church Friday evening, where the family will receive friends at the church from 7 to 9 p.m. Masonic Rites will be conducted at the church 8 p.m. Friday by Mouth of Wilson Masonic Lodge #223, A.F. & A.M. Military rites will be conducted at the graveside Saturday by Grayson County V.F.W. Post #7726. BLACK, Douglas Cecil (``Dee''), of Naples, Fla., son of the late Elbert G. Black and Kitty Meredith Black, went to be with the Lord, Monday, January 1, 1996 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. A Pulaski County native, Dee spent 20 years of service in the U.S. Army. He served his country in foreign assignments in Korea and Germany. Stateside, he served in North Carolina, Maryland, Colorado and Virginia. His Army career included logistics, recruiting, career counseling and ROTC Instructor at Virginia Tech. He retired from the U.S. Army in 1968 as a Master Sergeant with numerous commendations for excellent performance during service to his country. Dee's civic commitment was evident through his leadership and participation in the Junior Chamber of Commerce, as a member and past president. His community was a light of brightness for him, as he completed every goal. He also was active in Ruritan Club, scouting, and sandlot football. He was a member of Pulaski Elks Lodge. He was a past member of the First Baptist Church and First Methodist Church of Pul aski. Until his passing, he was an active member of Hope Wesleyan Church in Naples. Since retirement, Dee has been involved in various business endeavors and retired from Collier County Public Schools as Director of Purchasing on June 30, 1994. Dee is survived by his beloved wife and best friend, Carolyn (``Teddy'') Ferguson Black; his children, Michelle (``Jingle'') Woodmancy and family, Hank and Zachariah, Shawn Douglas Black and family, Deloris and Charity, all of Southwest Florida; his stepchildren, Jodie Hale and family, Sherwood, Lori, T.K., Adam and Haley, Bill Hale and family, Helene and Jacob, Tim Hale and family, Teresa, Ryan, Torie; also surviving are brothers and sisters, Isabel Akers, Sarah (``Tip'') Quillen, Elbert G. Black, Jr., Jewel Shufflebarger, all of Pulaski, Charles (``Zack'') Black, Bedford; one sister, deceased, Shirley Underwood. Family and friends will honor Dee with a candlelight ``Celebration of Everlasting Life'', at 7 p.m. Friday, January 5, 1996 at the United Methodist Church, Pulaski. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to Daily Bread. Friends will be received by the family 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, January 4, 1996 at Stevens Funeral Chapel on Randolph Ave., Pulaski. Dee's family will remember him as a child of God, an angel on earth who touched the lives of everyone he met. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle.
BOYDEN, Eva Gladys Moore, 81, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, December 31, 1995. Survivors include one son, Robert R. Boyden, Jr.; one grandson, David R. CLARK, Etony Deacon, 86, of Lexington, died Wednesday, January 3, 1996 in Stonewall Jackson ECF. She was the widow of Lee R. Clark. She was born March 9, 1909 in Rockbridge County, the daughter of the late James G. Deacon and Eliza Brown Deacon. Mrs. Clark was a member of Lauderdale A.R.P. Church. Surviving are a son, Carlton W. HORNE, Sam Ray, 59, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, January 2, 1996, after fighting a long, hard battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Mildred L. Horne; two sons, Sammie R. HYLTON, Christine Scott, 76, of Roanoke, beloved wife, mother and grandmother passed away Tuesday, January 2, 1996. She was a daughter of the late Eddie Bar and Iris Henley Scott. WATTS, Orestes K., of Portsmouth, died Monday, January 1, 1996 at Naval Regional Medical Center Portsmouth Naval Hospital in Portsmouth. He was born in Indian Rock, Va. and was employed with Virginia Electric and Power Company as a retired mechanic with 14 years service. He was a member of Prentis Park Seven-Day Adventist, Portsmouth and was a 22 year retired Machinist Mate First Class (E-6) U.S. Navy Veteran and an Honorary Member Club Twenty Social and Civic Club. Surviving include his wife, Josephine Watts, Portsmouth; three daughters, Tina Harris and Beverly Watts both of Portsmouth, Sherri Alba, Austin, Texas; two sons, Aubrey Watts, Del. and Dwain K. Watts, N.J.; three sisters, Ruth Lee and Lola Manigault both of Roanoke and Faye Barnett, Dayton, Ohio; brothers, Charlie Watts, Indian Rock and Robert Watts, Roanoke; 11 grandchildren; one aunt; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, January 5, 1996, New Bethel Baptist Church, Portsmouth with Pastor J. Broomfield officiating.
