'Native American Literature' class
DUBLIN - New River Community College will offer a new course in "Native American Literature" (ENG 195-70) spring semester at Appalachian Hall, 412 Roanoke St., Christiansburg. The class meets on Tuesdays beginning Jan. 16, from 6 until 8:40 p.m.
Sally Harris is the instructor. Students will discuss legends, myths, and social and spiritual aspects of American Indian life.
Register at NRCC's campus or at Appalachian Hall. Students may register before class begins on Jan. 16.

Resolution seeks Amtrak service
CHRISTIANSBURG - At the request of Roanoke City Council, Christiansburg Town Council has unanimously passed a resolution supporting Amtrak service in Southwest Virginia.
City Council recently asked many localities in Southwest Virginia to approve such a resolution. The resolution, which Town Council passed at its Tuesday meeting, supports the extension of Amtrak service between New York and Atlanta.
The idea is a perennial favorite in Southwest Virginia, and Christiansburg has approved several similar resolutions in recent years.
Bland Music Scholarship Contest
BLACKSBURG - The Blacksburg Host Lions Club will sponsor the Bland Music Scholarship Contest on Feb. 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the Best Western Red Lion Inn in Blacksburg.
Instrumentalists or vocalists enrolled in school below college level are eligible. Winners will compete at the district and state level. Prizes at the local level are $50 for first place and $35 for second place. State winners will receive scholarships ranging from $300 to $1,500.
Registration deadline is Feb. 3. Forms may be obtained at school music departments or by calling Joe Donckers, Blacksburg Host Lions Club, at 552-2317.
