SUPERVISORS TO DECIDE ON QUARRY; XPRESS MARKET POSTPONED|

A decision on a quarry expansion outside Blacksburg, a major new residential development near Radford and the selection of a new chairman will be up for consideration Monday before the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors.

The board meets at 7 p.m. on the third floor of the Montgomery County Courthouse in Christiansburg.

One issue that originally was scheduled for Monday - the controversial Xpress Market Inc. rezoning in Riner - has been postponed to Jan. 22. That's because a report on a deceleration lane requested of the Virginia Department of Transportation has not been received.

Items up for consideration Monday include:

Selection of a chairman. Republican Henry Jablonski and Democrat Joe Gorman have both expressed interest in the job, left vacant when Larry Linkous finished his term last month and was replaced by Mary Biggs. Supervisor Nick Rush, who earlier had been a contender, said this week he was no longer interested because of time constraints.

An initial public hearing on the 1996-97 county budget. The board will receive budget proposals next month from the School Board and county administration and will hold another public hearing in March before setting a tax rate to take effect in July.

Acco Stone Co.'s request to amend its special-use permit for the quarry between Jennelle and Yellow Sulphur roads. The stone company wants to expand into 90 additional acres as it closes out its current 90-acre quarry, parts of which date to 1963. The county Planning Commission recommended approval of the expansion 7-1.

Ben Harris' and Fred Franklin's requests to rezone 205 acres off Rock Road near Tyler Avenue and Radford for a 98-home residential development.
