There will be plenty of new faces at the 38th annual Grammy Awards ceremony this year, which is shaping up to be a duel between two new female singers, Alanis Morissette and Joan Osborne.
Nominations for the Grammys, which were announced Thursday by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, are strikingly more up-to-date than nominations in past years.
Morissette received six nominations, tying veteran Grammy winner Mariah Carey for most nominations. Receiving five nominations were Osborne, Glen Ballard (one of the songwriters on Morissette's album) and producer and songwriter Babyface.
Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony, to be held in Los Angeles on Feb. 28.
In the battle for album of the year, three musicians who have never won a Grammy - Morissette (``Jagged Little Pill''), Osborne (``Relish'') and Pearl Jam (``Vitalogy'') - will compete with perennial favorites like Michael Jackson (``HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I'') and Carey (``Daydream'').
More significantly, ``Gangsta's Paradise'' by Coolio could become the first rap song to win the record of the year award, which is given to a single. It is in competition with ``Waterfalls'' by TLC, ``Kiss From a Rose'' by Seal, ``One of Us'' by Osborne and ``One Sweet Day'' by Carey and Boyz II Men.
Morissette and Osborne are also in the running for best new artist along with young stars from country (Shania Twain), rock (Hootie and the Blowfish) and rhythm and blues (Brandy). In other fields, Foo Fighters, Blues Traveler, King Crimson, P.J. Harvey, Dave Matthews Band, Brave Combo, Dionne Farris, the Presidents of the United States of America and Rick Rubin received the first nominations of their careers.
In the classical field, the nominations were dominated by more serious recordings and less predictable names than in previous years. And Pierre Boulez replaced Georg Solti as the Grammy conductor of choice, garnering four nominations. Solti, who has so far won 30 Grammys, more than any other artist - pop or classical - received none.
