BOTETOURT FINISHES FAST

Lord Botetourt closed with a 15-1 run to win its second consecutive game, defeating Rockbridge County 58-52 on Friday night in Daleville in the Blue Ridge District opener for both boys' teams.

Trailing 51-43 with 6:08 to play, Lord Botetourt (2-5) held the Wildcats to a single point the rest of the way in outscoring Rockbridge County 17-5 in the final period.

Lord Botetourt forced 24 turnovers, with many of those coming in the second half after the Cavaliers tightened their man-to-man defense.

Michael Gates scored seven of his 10 points during the decisive run. Wesley Cox finished with 15 points and five steals.

Ricky Wright had 14 points to lead the Wildcats (1-6).

Glenvar 67, Craig County 49: The Highlanders held a 15-point lead at the half and the Rockets never could recover as Glenvar rolled to a Pioneer District victory in New Castle.

Josh Williamson led the Highlanders (5-4 overall, 2-0 district) in the first half with 14 of his game-high 16 points. Cory Willis had 14 points, nine in the second half.

Eric Gillingham led Craig County (1-4, 0-2) with 14 points

Salem 63, Alleghany 48: The Spartans (4-4, 1-0) broke open a one-point game by outscoring the Mountaineers 24-10 in the fourth quarter to prevail in a Blue Ridge District matchup in Salem.

Herschel Thomas scored seven of his 14 points in the fourth and Kwam Lewis scored nine of his 17 in the period.

Parry McCluer 64, James River 50: Junior Chip Coleman took care of the first half and senior Boo Rowsey the second as the Fighting Blues ran away from the Knights in a key Pioneer District matchup in Buena Vista.

Coleman scored 12 of his 16 points in the first half as Parry McCluer (7-1, 1-1) took a five-point lead. Rowsey had 15 of his game-high 19 in the second half.

James River (6-2, 0-2) was led by Chris Firebaugh and Quincy Springs with 10 points each.

Lynchburg Christian 50, Roanoke Catholic 49: Shea Ferguson made two free throws with four seconds to go as the Bulldogs topped the Celtics (2-5, 1-2) in a VIC game in Lynchburg.

Aki Al-Zubaidi put Roanoke Catholic up by one by hitting one of two free throws with 13 seconds left. Lynchburg Christian worked for a shot, missed and Ferguson was fouled while going for the offensive rebound.

Roanoke Catholic's Brendan McCarthy led all scorers with 14 points

Hargrave Military 66, North Cross 65: The Raiders (0-6, 0-2) rallied from a 12-point halftime deficit to push the visiting Caissons (1-5, 1-2) to the limit, but fell in a VIC game.

Carlos Pearson's free throw put Hargrave up four late in the game before Brad Fielder hit a 3-pointer. North Cross, however, could not get the ball back.

Brian Whitaker had 15 points and nine rebounds to lead the Raiders, Brandon LaCroix added 14.

Pearson led the Caissons with 23 points.

Holy Cross 52, Roanoke Valley Christian 50: Chris Huffman scored five consecutive points for the Eagles in the closing seconds to tie the Virginia Independent Conference game with the Gaels, but he couldn't defend against Kris Wheeler's tip-in at the buzzer.

Jon Bumgrance led Holy Cross with 14 points and Garth Calhoun chipped in with 12. Wheeler finished with four.

Huffman was the leading scorer for Roanoke Valley Christian (7-3, 3-2) with 12 points.

Girls

William Fleming 55, Patrick Henry 13: Shaunarey Walker and Renita Walker combined for 24 points as the Colonels recovered from a slow start to post an easy Roanoke Valley District over the visiting Patriots.

Carol Ellis grabbed 10 rebounds for the Colonels (7-2, 2-0). PH is 0-8, 0-4.

Roanoke Valley Christian 36, Holy Cross 32: Rebecca Bryant scored a game-high 12 points - all in the first half - as the Eagles took an early lead and held on to down the Gaels in a Blue Ridge Conference game in Lynchburg.

Bryant also had eight rebounds for RVC (8-2, 4-1), which held an eight-point halftime lead.

Holy Cross was led by Marie Gamis' 10 points.

North Cross 50, Hargrave Military 12: The Raiders built a 14-point first-quarter lead and never looked back as they defeated the Tigers in a Blue Ridge Conference game in Chatham.

North Cross (2-4) was led in scoring by Catherine Kelly's 15 points and Ann Ballenger's 11.

Hargrave is 0-7.

Lynchburg Christian 54, Roanoke Catholic 26: Shannon Carroll scored 16 points to lead the Bulldogs (5-6, 3-1) to a Blue Ridge Conference victory over the Celtics (3-5, 2-2) in Lynchburg.
