Matt Verkey scored 25 points to pace four players in double figures as William and Mary defeated James Madison 96-71 Saturday in a Colonial Athletic Association basketball game.
The Tribe (3-6 overall, 1-1 CAA) led 37-34 at the break but in the second half shot 70 percent from the field while James Madison shot just 30 percent. The Dukes (4-9, 0-2) finished at 37 percent for the game.
William and Mary's Bobby Fitzgibbons converted a 3-point goal and a three-point play to give the Tribe a 55-45 lead with 13:45 left.
JMU's Darren McLinton answered with a basket to cut the deficit to single digits, but another 3-pointer by Fitzgibbons, who finished with 18 points, made it 58-47. The Tribe led by double figures the rest of the way.
James Madison was only 1-of-15 from the 3-point arc in the second half. McLinton, who led JMU with 27 points, was 3-of-4 from 3-point range in the first half but finished 4-of-15.
