BATES, Mattie Mae Ogden, 85, of Buena Vista, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, January 9, 1996. S he died in Stonewall Jackson Hospital. She was born March 10, 1910 in Buena Vista, daughter of the late Doss Ogden and Mattie Truslow Ogden. She was a member of the First Brethren Church for over 70 years. She taught Sunday School for 63 years. She was preceded in death by a son, Robert E.. Pryor. Surviving are her husband, John E. ``Eddie'' Bates; a daughter and special son-in-law, Joyce and Charlie M. Secrist, Buena Vista; a son and daughter-in-law, Donald F. and Pat Bates, Birmingham, Ala.; a very special niece, Betty Jane Bates, Williamstown, N.J.; daughter-in-law, June W. Pryor, Natural Bridge; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Bolling, Grose & Lotts Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. CANTRELL, Ellendar E., of Roanoke, died Monday, January 8, 1996. Surviving are her husband, William E. Cantrell, Sr.; sons, William E. CHITWOOD, Barbara Altice Davis, 61, of Route 1, Glade Hill, died Tuesday, January 9, 1996, in a Roanoke hospital. She was preceded in death by her parents, Moorman and Mildred Altice. CLARK, Doris Price, (``Tissie'') 69, of 122-8th St., N.W., Pulaski, Va. died Monday, January 8, 1996, at Southampton Memorial Hospital, Franklin, Va. Mrs. Clark was born on December 25, 1926, and was a native of McDowell County, W.Va. She was the daughter of the late William Cone and Rachel Godsen Price. Mrs. Clark attended Marshall College, now Marshall University, in Huntington, W.Va., and had retired as an insurance clerk for Pulaski Community Hospital. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Pulaski. Surviving are her husband, Gerald Vance Clark, Pulaski; daughter, Carol C. McNeely, Franklin, Va.; son, David L. Clark, Pulaski; sister, Carol Price Adkins, Bluefield, W.Va.; brothers, William Price, Oklahoma City, Col. James Price (Ret. U.S. Army), Carlisle, Pa.; grandson; Irwin Hollar (Trey) McNeely, III, Franklin, Va. COX, Pauline Ferguson, 79, of Bedford, passed away Monday, January 8, 1996 in the Bedford County Memorial Hospital. She was born December 22, 1916 in Bedford County, a daughter of the la te Charlie W. Ferguson and Eddie Arthur Ferguson. Her husband was the late Roscoe Cox. She was a retired employee of Rubatex Corp. and was a member of the Morgans Baptist Church. She is survived by a son, H. Leslie Cox, Huddleston; a daughter, Phyllis Ellis, Bedford; three sisters, Iris Lipscomb, Lois Johnson, both of Bedford, Bernice Overstreet, Altavista; a brother, Jack Ferguson, Moneta, five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. CRAGHEAD, Bessie Conner, 90, of Roanoke, died Monday, January 8, 1996, at Friendship Manor. She was the widow of Ellet J. Craghead and was a member of the Tabernacle Baptist Church of Salem. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Katherine Beeler. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Almeta C . and J. Edward Angel; one son and daughter-in-law, Paul D. and Maxine K. DUNCAN, Neil W., 94, of Chilhowie, died Monday, January 8, 1996 in Smyth County Community Hospital, Marion. He was a life-long resident and farmer of Smyth County, and a member of the Mountain View United Methodist Church. He is survived by one brother, Miles D. Duncan, Chilhowie; two sisters, Mrs. David A. Rouse a nd Mrs. Earl E. Copenhaver, both of Chilhowie; three nephews, William M. Hylton Jr. and George Rouse, both of Chilhowie, Charles Copenhaver, Bristol; two nieces, Mrs. Dale Oliver Blacksburg, Mrs. Terry Lineberry, Greensboro, N.C.; five great nephews and four great nieces. FISHER, Virgil Andrew, 83, of Mt. Vie w Community near Pearisburg, died Friday, January 5, 1996 in Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg. Born in Ripplemead on June 5, 1912, he was a son of the late Michael and Nannie Whittaker Fisher. He was a member of the Mt. View United Methodist Church, and a retired employee of the Giles County School Board as a school bus driver. Surviving are his wife, Muriel Claudine Dent Fisher; two sons, Robert Andrew Fisher, Narrows, and George Felix Fisher, Pearisburg; four daughters, Hazel Gardener, Pearisburg, Bonnie Ivey, Sumter, S.C., Charlotte Martin, Pearisburg, and Sarah Katherine Conley, Narrows; two brothers, Preston Fisher, Narrows, and James Fisher, Covington; one sister, Elsie Bales, Woodbridge; 13 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, January 11, 1996 at 2 p.m. in the Kendall Funeral Home Chapel in Pembroke, with the Rev. Larry Patton and the Rev. Junior Holt officiating. HARDY, Renna Reinicker, 90, of Fredericksburg, died Sunday, January 7, 1996 , in Mary Washington Hospital. She was a homemaker and the widow of Thomas Irvin Hardy. She was a member of Fredericksburg United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women, a member of Fredericksburg Women's Club, and Washington-Lewis Chapter of D.A.R. She was formerly of Victoria and Covington, where she was active in garden clubs and women's club work. In 1951, she served as Covington's Christmas Mother. Mrs. Hardy attended Longwood College and taught school in her early years. Survivors include her daughter, Mrs. Hugh C. Cosner, Fredericksburg; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. on Thursday at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel. HEDGE, Inez Aker, 79, of Wytheville, died Sunday, January 7, 1996 at Community Hospital in Roano ke. She was born in Wythe County, the daughter of the late Steven Andrew Douglas Aker and Lilly Belle Wright Aker. She was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church and was preceded in death by a daughter, Sonja Gail Hedge. She is survived by her husband, Homer C. Hedge of the home; one son, Homer Ray Hedge of Speedwell; two grandsons, Allen Todd Crigger of Sugar Grove; Bryan Ray Hedge of Princeton, West Va., one sister, Margaret (Bog) Shipwash of Roanoke; two great-grandchildren and several very special nieces and nephews also survive. HILL, Bessie Ellen Doyle, of Salem, died Tuesday, January 9, 1996 at her home. She is the widow of Marcus C. Hill. Survivors include her children, McCoy Hill, Alma Hill and Sylvia and her husband Bob Lemon; grandchildren, Garland Walters and Rita Williams and Rick Hill; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. JOHNSON, Rachel Ann Jones, 62, of Wytheville, died unexpectedly Monday, January 8, 1996 at her residence. She was a member of the Cedar Hill United Methodist Church, a member of the Wytheville Ladies Ruritan Club, and a retired legal secretary and Realtor. She was preceded in death by her father, Hugh Stuart Jones, and her husband, William E. Johnson Jr. She is survived by her mother, Kathleen Lindamood Jones, and one sister, Addie Kathleen Jones, both of Wytheville; one step-daughter and husband, Nan and Chris Oakey of Neptune Beach, Fla.; one step-granddaughter; three half brothers, Albert Jones, George Jones and Carl Jones, and four half sisters, Florence Wade, Helen Archer, Evelyn Smith and Ethel Shelton. McCOY, Elsie M. Hall, 73, of 125 Wallace St., Apt. 107, Lexington, died Wednesday, January 3, 1996, at the Stonewall Jackson Hospital, Lexington. Mrs. M cCoy was born in Lexington, January 6, 1922, the daughter of the late James R. and Addie Randall Hall. She was preceded in death by her husband, Austin L. McCoy Sr., April 19, 1992. She was a member of the Randolph Street United Methodist Church, Lexington. She is survived by one son, Austin L. McCoy Jr., Oakland, Calif.; one daughter, Ms. Adele McCoy; and a grandson, Arden Hall, both of Puerto Rico; two sisters, Mrs. Lucille Hobson and Mrs. Elaine J. Bannister, both of Lexington; also several nephews and nieces. MEADOWS, Lyle William, 88, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, January 9, 1996. He was an employee of Norfolk & Western Railway for 48 years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #163. He is survived by his wife, Ruby Irene Meadows; two daughters and sons-in-law, Dot and John Moran, and Judy and Dennis Ayers; one son and daughter-in-law, Ronnie L. and Pamela Meadows; four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. SCHILLING, Kathryn Hughes, 88, of Roanoke, died Sunday, January 7, 1996. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Michael Schilling. She is survived by her daughters, Ann McCarver, Gallatin Gateway, Mont., Marie Wertz, Tampa, Fla.; sons, Robert M. Schilling Jr., Oak Ridge, Tenn., Richard W. Schilling, Waynesboro; seven grandchildren. Funer al services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church, by Father Robert Cummins, with burial in Sherwood Memorial Park. A reception to follow at the church hall. The family will receive friends from 4 and 7 p.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Nazareth. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the church or to your favorite charity. Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Lotz Roanoke Chapel.

STEWART, Lewis Jerome, 46, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, January 7, 1996. He was a member of the Lucy Addison High School Class of 1967. Before retiring, he worked for the Norfolk Southern Railroad. He is survived by his wife, Mary M. G. Stewart; a daughter, India I. Stewart of Nebraska; a stepdaughter, Amy L. Girty of Roanoke; his mother, Mary C. Stewart of Roanoke; two brothers, James R. Stewart of Roanoke and Christopher Stewart of Colorado; two sisters, Faye S. (Dr. Reginald) Shareef and Brenda S. Hackley of Roanoke; three grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Sweet Union Baptist Church, with Dr. Edward T. Burton officiating. Interment will be in Williams Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home.

VIA, Rudolph T., (``Rudy""), 69, of Roanoke, died Monday, January 8, 1996, after a long illness. He was born in Lynchburg and was a retired employee of Borden Inc. in Roanoke. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Margaret W. Via; his two sons and daughters-in-law, Rudy C. and Carolyn F. Via of Roanoke, and Steve L. and Teresa W. Via of Arring ton; one daughter and son-in-law, Sandra V. and Ben Arbogast of Charlottesville; six grandchildren, and one sister, Emma V. Walton of Madison Heights. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, January 11, 1996, at Fort Hill Memorial Park in Lynchburg, with Dr. Daniel R. Mitchell officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Oakey's North Chapel.

WHITTAKER, Sidney Vance, 67, of Pembroke, Va. died Friday, January 5, 1996 in Giles Memorial Hospital. Born in White Gate in Giles County, Va., he was a son of the late Daniel Jessie and Mary Elizabeth Lawson Whittaker. Surviving are two brothers, James Whittaker and Clayton Whittaker of Pembroke; five sisters, Nellie Stanley, Mollie Clemons, and Lena Rucker of Pembroke, Rosie Corner of Pearisburg, and Dorothy Vaught of Eggleston, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, January 11, 1996 at 10:00 a.m. in the Kendall Funeral Home Chapel in Pembroke, Va. Burial will be in the Gordon Cemetery on Guinea Mountain in Giles County. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday evening from 6:00 until 9:00 p.m.

WOODY, William, 77, of Roanoke, passed away Friday, January 5, 1996. The funeral service has been rescheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday at the Hamlar-Curtis Chapel. Dr. Edward T. Burton will officiate, and interment will be in Williams Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

WRIGHT, Myrtle Spraker, 97, of Route 3, Wytheville, died Sunday, January 7, 1996, at the Birdmont Health Care Center. She was the daughter of the late Burton and Alice Umberger Spraker of Cripple Creek. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Wright; two sons, John and J. B. Wright, and two grandsons, Bill Akers and Tim Dalton. She was a lifelong member of Olive Branch United Methodist Church. She is survived by seven daughters and sons-in-law, Irene W. Mathews of Route 3, Wytheville, Mary and Dude Rash of Oak Ridge, Tenn., Kathryn and Jim McRoberts of Route 1, Max Meadows, Betty and Frank Ashford of Route 3, Wytheville, Josephine and Thomas Dalton of Route 3, Wytheville, Aggie Reynolds of Wytheville, and Janice and Julian Horton of Route 3, Wytheville; two daughters-in-law, Kathleen Wright of Radford and Dean Wright of Wytheville; one sister, Molina Fisher of Wytheville; 22 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 11, 1996, at 3 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Joe Carrico and the Rev. Allen Ashford officiating. Interment will be in the Olive Branch Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Barnett Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, or at the residence of her daughter, Irene Mathews, at any time. Barnett Funeral Home in Wytheville is in charge of the arrangements.
