King birthday banquet
The Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Birthday Banquet will be held Sunday at 6 p.m. at the Thirlane Road Holiday Inn, Roanoke.
The event, sponsored by Concerned Citizens for Justice U.S.A., will honor the following as people and organizations: the Bradley Free Clinic, Sarah Holland, Rosa Miller, the West End Learning Center, Sweet Union Baptist Church, Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home.
The guest speaker will be Tracie McKinney of WSLS-TV news. The Rev. Dr. Curtis Harris, Virginia president and national vice president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, will be among the dignitaries attending.
Tickets are $25 per person. Organizations may purchase a corporate block of tickets.

Lecture series
Sweet Briar College will present its 1996 Winter Forums lecture series, ``Entitlements: Who Wins? Who Loses?,'' each Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. during January.
Today, Kimberly Barnes-O'Connor will discuss ``The Current Issues Facing Congress.'' Barnes-O'Connor is the Republican staff children's policy coordinator for the Senate Committee on Labor and Human Resources and a legislative aide to Sen. Nancy Kassebaum.
Dr. Carol Stack on Jan. 17 will speak on ``African-American Migration, Family Values and Social Capital.'' Stack is professor of education and women's studies at the University of California at Berkeley and a visiting scholar of the Russell Sage Foundation.
Heather Lamm, project director for entitlement reform at the Concord Coalition, on Jan. 24 will discuss ``Eliminating the Federal Budget Deficit: The Key to America's Future.''
The lectures will be held in the college's Babcock Auditorium. A reading listing of recommended materials is available.
