Representatives of cooperating agencies from Virginia and West Virginia kicked off a $3 million water project Wednesday, which includes a line through Interstate 77's East River Mountain tunnel at the state line.
Water from a private West Virginia company will be piped to Bland County to serve more than 180 residents in the North Gap, South Gap, Rocky Gap, Hicksville and Wolf Creek areas and two Virginia Department of Transportation rest areas, all now getting water from marginal sources. It also will provide water to a new industrial park.
The project, four years in the planning, could be finished this summer.
Funds are coming from the water company, transportation department, Bland County Board of Supervisors, Rural Economic & Community Development (formerly the Farmers Home Administration), Virginia Water Project Inc., and a Virginia Community Development Block Grant.
