BATES, Mattie Mae Ogden, 85, of Buena Vista, died Tuesday, January 9, 1996. Funeral service 2 p.m. Friday, Bolling, Grose & Lotts Funeral Chapel, Buena Vista.

BEAMER, Raymond Harden, 85, of Fancy Gap, passed away Wednesday, January 10, 1996, at Twin County Regional Hospital, Galax. Born in Carroll County on May 21, 1910, Mr. Beamer was an active member of Fancy Gap United Methodist Church where he served as a member of the Administrative Board and the Board of Trustees, and as a lay leader, superintendent of Sunday school and president of Methodist Men. He also served as a member of the Holston Conference Board of Trustees. He was a member and Past Master of Hillsville Masonic Lodge #193, served as District Deputy of 43rd Masonic District of Grand Lodge of Virginia and treasurer of the Lodge for 44 years. Mr. Beamer was retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation with over 42 years of service, overseeing the roads in the counties of Carroll and Floyd. He was a member of the Carroll County Electoral Board and served as chairman for over 13 years. He was a charter member of the Carroll County Farm Bureau and a past president. He was a past president of the Hillsville Rotary Club, past patron of the Hillsville OES #71, was a Shriner and a member of the Scottish Rite, 32 degree. He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather, and will be greatly missed by his wife of 58 years, Herma Allen Beamer; his two daughters and sons-in-law, Billie Jean and Henry Hill of Stuart, and Betty and Dennis Semones of Salem; his two sons and daughters-in-law, Barnett and Bonnie Beamer of Salem, and Frank and Cheryl Beamer of Blacksburg; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Hazel B. Browder of Salem and Edith B. Jones of Arlington; one brother, Carter W. Beamer of Wytheville, and two sisters-in-law, Rosemary Beamer of Roanoke and Charlotte C. Beamer of Blacksburg. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, January 12, 1996, at the Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel, Hillsville, with the Rev. Layne Pennington officiating. Interment will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery at Woodlawn. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday and from 11 a.m. Friday until the time of the service. CRAWFORD, Virginia Cottrell, 44, of Route 2, Bedford, died Friday, January 5, 1996, in Roanoke Memorial Hospital from injuries received in an automobile accident on January 3, 1996. She was born in Bedford County, May 13, 1951, daughter of James Madison Cottrell and the late Hazel Virginia Howell Cottrell. Besides her mother, she was preceded in death by her brother, James Charlie Cottrell. She was a member of Suck Spring Baptist Church and was Assistant Vice-President and Loan Officer of Bedford Federal Savings Bank, where she had been a loyal and devoted employee for over 26 years. She considered her fellow employees a part of her extended family and unselfishly treated her customers as her own. She was a 1969 graduate of Liberty High, where she was a member of the National Honor Society and helped in organizing class reunions. As a model parent, she devoted her energies to supporting her twin sons in their school projects and participated in their clubs and organizations, often being elected club Treasurer. She lived her life in unceasing service to others. In addition to her father, she is survived by her husband, Thomas L. (Tommy) Crawford; twin sons, Andrew L. (Andy) Crawford and James G. (Jamey) Crawford; her brother and sister-in-law, John William (Bill) and Helen M. Cottrell, all of Bedford; also several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 13, 1996, at Bedford Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerry M. Parr and the Rev. Wilton O. Gleaton officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. Memorials may be made to either the Bedford Christian Ministries or the Bedford Life Saving Crew. DAVIS, William Gale, 63, of Salem, died Sunday, January 7, 1996. He was born in Tesla, W.Va. He was retired from Hooker Furniture where he worked for 29 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Davis, three sisters and two brothers . JOHNSON, Rachel Ann Jones, 62, of Wytheville, died Monday, January 8, 1996. She was a member of the Cedar Hill United Methodist Church, and a member of the Wytheville Ladies Ruritan Club. She was a retired legal secretary and realtor. She was preceded in death by her father, Hugh Stuart Jones; and her husband, William E. Johnson Jr. She is survived by her mother, Kathleen Lindamood Jones; one sister, Addie Kathleen Jones, both of Wytheville; special cousin, Mrs. Kenneth (Loretta L.) Hicks, Salem; one stepdaughter and husband, Nan and Chris Oakey, Neptune Beach, Fla.; one stepgranddaughter; three half brothers, Albert Jones, George Jones and Carl Jones; four half sisters; Florence Wade, Helen Archer, Evelyn Smith, and Ethel Shelton. MARKHAM, Irene Eunice, 87, of Glasgow, died Wednesday, January 10, 1996 in the Shenandoah Valley Health Care Center. Born in Rockbridge County March 1, 1908, she was the daughter of the late John Henry Layne and Katherine Evelyne Kidd Layne. Mrs. Markham was a member of the Glasgow Baptist Church and the widow of Jack C. Markham. Surviving are one daughter, Eu la Brown, Covington; two sons, Kenneth Markham, Glasgow, Curtis Markham, Glasgow; eleven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. MARSHALL, Gettes Ingoe, of Roanoke County, passed away Sunday, January 7, 1996. Mrs. Marshall was born in Wythe County and moved to the Lakeside area near Salem in the mid 1920's. She spent some of her young adult life living and working in the Midwest, but returned to the Roanoke area during World War II and married her Army sweetheart, Fonde Oak (Dick) Marshall, who preceded her in death, but they were together nearly 50 years. Gettes was a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church and taught Sunday School for many years. She also taught many Roanoke area adults the skill of shorthand during the 1950's and 60's at Cornett School of Business and Roanoke College. Before retiring to the Mount Pleasant area in the 1960's, she and Dick ran a small neighborhood grocery store in the Northwest area of Roanoke. The store was a family focused activity that provided work opportunities for several of her nephews. Surviving are her sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and Larry Tyler, Roanoke; nephews, Reggie, David, Ronnie, Mike, and John; nieces, Emma Sue, Bobbie, Barbara Jane, and Anne; also numerous friends, neighbors, and a special Sunday School class, who will miss her. Funeral services will be held at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, Saturday, January 13, 12 noon, with the Rev. Jerry Cloninger Jr. and the Rev. Bruce Griffith Jr. officiating. Interment will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park next to her husband, Dickie. MARTIN, Mildred June, 68, of Honaker, died Tuesday, January 9, 1996, in Tazewell Community Hospital. A lifelong resident of Russell County, she was of the Baptist faith. She was retired from the state of VA Department of Corrections. Survivors include five sister, Irene May, Bluff City, Tenn., Gladys Stump, Baltimore , Md., Helen Darocha, Salem, Faye Jessee, Dayton, Ohio, Charlene Hause, Bristol; one brother, Donald Wayne Martin, Honaker; 14 nephews; 11 nieces. A native of Wythe County, Va., Mrs. Miller was a member of Rural Retreat Memorial Methodist Church. She was also a charter member of the United Methodist Women and the Quilters at her church. PRATT, Laura Belle, 74, of Rich Valley, died Wednesday, January 10, 1996, in the Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion. She was a member of the Rich Valley Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Pr att was a teacher in the Smyth County School System for 18 years. She is survived by her husband, James M. (``Jim"") Pratt Jr. of Rich Valley; a son, James M. SAUL, Galen D., 71, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, January 8, 1996. He was a member of Peters Creek Church of the Brethren and retired from Peoples Life Insurance Company after 35 years of service. Mr. Saul was a Navy veteran of World War II. Surviving are his wife, Margaret Henderson Saul; daughter and son-in-law, Jane S. and Charles E. Kuznicki, Cape Coral, Fla.; sisters and brother-in-law, Bernice S. O'Donnell, Roanoke, Genevee and Richard Jeter, Bonsack; brother and sister-in-law, Bobby L. and Dottie Saul, Roanoke. Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday at Oakey's North Chapel by the Rev. Jack Lowe and the Rev. Paris Bain. Interment will follow in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. SPENCER, Burton Mallory, 32, of 117 Lower Christ School Road, Fletcher, N.C., died Saturday, December 30, 1995, in London, England. He was the son of the late Dr. William R. Spencer, Raleigh, N.C., Dr. Norris H. Bell, Reston, Va., and Dr. Donna Ledbetter Bell, of the home. A native of Buncombe County, he attended Ravenscroft School in Raleigh, N.C., North Cross School in Roanoke, Va., (where he was named a National Merit Commended Scholar), and Asheville School, graduating in 1982. He attended the University of Virginia, where he was a member of the Canterbury Club, an associate editor of ""The Cavalier Daily"", a student member of the Farmington Hunt Club and Polo Team, and a member of the College Republican Club. During the summer terms he interned in Jesse Helms' Raleigh office, in Jack Kemp's Washington office, and in the College Republican National Committee office. He received a B.A. degree in History in 1986 and moved to New York to become a sales and trading assistant at Shearson Lehman Brothers. He returned to Charlottesville, Va. as an investment broker and broadcast the closing stock market report daily for ra dio station WINA. He also completed two years of graduate work in Accounting, Economics and Business Management. He moved to Washington, D.C. and was an investment broker and a Candidate for Certificate in Theological and Liturgical studies at Georgetown University. He was a member of the International Hostel Association and traveled extensively throughout Western Europe, Canada, and the United States. At the time of his death, he was enrolled in UNCA's Master of Liberal Arts degree program and was writing a thesis about the Holocaust in London. Survivors include his sister, Ms. Kristen B. Bell, Greensboro, N.C.; and his grandparents, Mrs. Louise N. Bell, Asheville, N.C., Mr. William R. Ledbetter, and Mrs. Ruby M. Ledbetter, of the home. The memorial service will be held at noon Friday, January 12, 1996, at the Cathedral of All Souls Episcopal Church. The Very Rev. Cornelius A. Zabriskie will officiate. The Rev. Canon James Melnyk and the Rev. Canon Joan Marshall will assist. The family will receive friends in the library immediately following the service. Memorials may be made to the Cathedral of All Souls Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 5978, Asheville, N.C. 28813. Kenyons Funeral Home in London, and Morris Funeral Home in Asheville, N.C. are handling the arrangements.

STEWART, Lewis Jerome, 46, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, January 7, 1996. He was a member of the Lucy Addison High School Class of 1967. Before retiring, he worked for the Norfolk Southern Railroad. He is survived by his wife, Mary M. G. Stewart; a daughter, India I. Stewart of Nebraska; a stepdaughter, Amy L. Girty of Roanoke; his mother, Mary C. Stewart of Roanoke; two brothers, James R. Stewart of Roanoke and Christopher Stewart of Colorado; two sisters, Faye S. (Dr. Reginald) Shareef and Brenda S. Hackley of Roanoke; three grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Hamlar Curtis Chapel with Dr. Edward T. Burton officiating. Interment will be in Williams Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home

TRENT, Minnie W., 89, of Roanoke, died Monday, January 8, 1996. She was a member of Garden City Baptist Church for 58 years. She was the widow of Ralph M. Trent, and is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Berley and Kirk Fleming, Bracey, Va.; sons and daughters-in-law, James H. (``Jim'') and Millie Trent, Roy Bernard an d Hazel Trent, all of Roanoke; six grandchildren, J. Barry Trent, Gwen Lynch, Faye Burdette, Debbie Trent, Ronnie Trent, Vanessa Baldwin; nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at Lotz Roanoke Chapel, 2 p.m. Friday, January 12, 1996, with the Rev. Don McCaskill officiating. Interment in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be given to Garden City Baptist Church. The family will receive friends at Lotz Roanoke Chapel, 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday

Vest, Harry William, 78, of Roanoke, died Monday, January 8, 1996. Mr. Vest was a veteran of World War II, serving in Europe with the 116th Infantry, the 29th Division. He was a member of the 29th Division Association. He was a retired employee of the City of Roanoke. Surviving are his wife, Frances Proctor Vest; daughters, Ann Vest Roark, Winston Salem, N.C., Brenda Vest, Roanoke; son, Michael Vest, New York, N.Y.; grandchildren, Jennifer Howell, Christine and Lisa Paterson; sister, Doris Savoy, Springfield, Mass. In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials be made to either Preston Oaks Baptist Church or Hollins Road Baptist Church. A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday at Oakey's North Chapel by the Reverend Mark Washington. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Oakey's North Chapel.
