Maid Bess Corp. of Salem on Thursday promoted its executive vice president, Dick Robers, to president and chief operating officer.
Robers, 53, succeeds Glenn Thornhill Jr., who remains with the company as chairman of the board and chief executive officer.
Robers joined Maid Bess in 1978 as director of human resources. A 1964 graduate of Xavier University in Cincinnati, he has also held posts of corporate vice president and secretary with the company.
"Our plans would be to continue to be successful and grow the business," Robers said.
Maid Bess makes uniforms for a variety of occupations, including restaurant workers, nurses and doctors' jackets. The company's biggest customer is Crest Uniform of New York City, Robers said.
Robers is a former chairman of the Roanoke County Board of Supervisors and was a proponent of the unsuccessful effort earlier in the decade to consolidate Roanoke and Roanoke County. He has been chairman of the United Way's Day of Caring, president of Our Lady of Nazareth Parish Council and president of the Blue Ridge Regional Health Care Coalition.
He has written several articles for apparel and textile industry publications about employee relations.
