BRIEFLY PUT ... MORE SNOW; VOLUNTEERING IN RADFORD

SNOWFALL Friday morning didn't hit Southwest Virginia so hard as earlier feared. The snow amounted to only 4 inches or so; it wasn't so heavy as to cause widespread power outages; with the quick emergence of the sun, it began melting almost as soon as it stopped falling.

So you could view Friday's "weather event" as nothing much compared to the biggie last weekend. On the other hand, you could view it as the final indignity.

A SMALL item, perhaps, but of a kind Americans may be seeing more of: On Jan. 24, Radford University will hold an on-campus Volunteer Fair, to showcase Radford-area human-service agencies for Radford students (and other folks for that matter) interested in signing up for volunteer work.

Representatives of more than 20 agencies, ranging from Habitat for Humanity to Big Brothers/Big Sisters, are expected. Such social-service agencies generally need good volunteers. In this budget-cutting era, they generally need them more than ever.

If talk of relying more on private-sector organizations to hold together the social safety net is to be more than hollow rhetoric, ideas like Radford's Volunteer Fair are essential.
