New signup date for RU kids' program
RADFORD - The Radford University Physical Education Majors Club's children's activity program will begin Saturday, Jan. 20, instead of today.
Registration is Friday, Jan. 19, 5-6:15 p.m., in Peters Hall. The six-week program for children ages 5 to 12 will meet Saturdays, 9:30-11:30 a.m. Sessions include soccer, gymnastics, swimming and games. Cost is $20. Call Steve Ames at 831-5329 or Mike Dumin at 831-5712.
Fund established to help Ross Andrew
BLACKSBURG - A fund has been established to help offset medical expenses for Ross Andrew, 8-year-old son of Charles "Spike" Andrew and Betsy Andrew. Ross was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in September.
The Andrew family is dealing with medical bills of more than $25,000 and upcoming expenses for 2 1/2 years of chemotherapy at Duke University.
Contributions can be made to the Ross Andrew Health Fund at First National Bank, in care of Grover Jones, P.O. Box 178, Blacksburg 24063-0178.
Support meetings for caregivers
BLACKSBURG - Caregivers of adults who need assistance in their daily living are invited to a series of support group meetings in the coming months at Virginia Tech.
The meetings will be at 6 p.m. in Wallace Hall, room 102. The next meeting, Jan. 23, will deal with managing caregiver stress.
The March 5 meeting will focus on handling emotions. Facing dependency will be the topic for the April 3 meeting.
Coping strategies for caregivers is the topic for April 30.

MDA Car Show set for Feb. 23-25
ROANOKE - The 16th annual Muscular Dystrophy Association Car Show, sponsored by the Roanoke Valley Charity Car Show Committee, will be held Feb. 23-25 at the Roanoke Civic Center.
Custom cars, street rods, race cars, antiques and classics, pro-streets, motorcycles, pickups, muscle cars, four-wheel drives, off-road vehicles and vans may be entered. There is no entry fee. Commercial booth space is available.

Pulaski County worker holiday
PULASKI - Pulaski County employees will be able to count last Monday, when county work was canceled because of the snowstorm, as a holiday.
The county Board of Supervisors approved that designation at its organizational meeting Wednesday night. It also instructed its staff to come up with a recommended policy to cover situations of this kind in the future.
The storm closed the county government for only one day.
Offices to close for holiday
CHRISTIANSBURG - The town offices, recreation department and senior center will be closed Monday in observance of Lee-Jackson-King Day.
Garbage service for Monday will be Tuesday, along with the regular Tuesday service. Residents should place their garbage at the edge of the street before 8 a.m.

Leukemia society marathon recruiting
ROANOKE - Virginia's chapter of The Leukemia Society of America is recruiting runners in the Roanoke and Lynchburg area to run the San Francisco Marathon on July 14. Area runners will participate in the marathon for someone who cannot because of leukemia. Proceeds will be used to help find a cure by the year 2000.
Coaches are provided for runners competing in their first marathon or to help a veteran marathon runner achieve a personal best time. All travel arrangements and expenses are paid by the Leukemia Society.
Team in Training runners will participate with hundreds of other runners and meet the patient for whom they are running. The Leukemia Society will provide fund-raising materials and ideas to help runners achieve their dollar goal.
Because of advances in leukemia research, a child diagnosed with leukemia has almost an 80 percent chance of achieving a long term remission, as opposed to just a 4 percent chance thirty years ago.
A meeting and complimentary dinner will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 17, at the Olive Garden, 1925 Valley View Blvd., at 6:30 p.m.

RU community theater workshop
RADFORD - Radford University's Community Arts School will sponsor a theater workshop for children ages 8-16 starting Saturday, Feb. 24, and continuing each week with a public performance on March 30.

Commission applicants sought
CHRISTIANSBURG - Montgomery County supervisors will appoint a District A representative to the Parks and Recreation Commission.
Those applying for the three-year term should be county residents who are registered voters in good tax standing.
A letter of intent should be sent to Betty Thomas, county administrator, P.O. Box 806, Christiansburg, Va. 24073 by Feb. 1.
The commission serves as an advisory board to the Parks and Recreation Department in developing leisure activities and programs for residents of all ages in Montgomery County.|
Focus 2006 panel applicants sought
CHRISTIANSBURG - The Montgomery County School Board is looking for a representative from the Blacksburg, Christiansburg, Riner and Shawsville areas to serve on the Montgomery County Focus 2006 Advisory Committee.
The committee supports the School Board's efforts to implement Six-Year Plan goals and Focus 2006 recommendations, which were the result of 18 months of work by approximately 350 citizens.
The committee will meet approximately six nights per year to evaluate the school system's efforts in support of Focus 2006 goals.

Rabies Awareness Week in Virginia
RADFORD - Rabies Awareness Week is Monday through Friday. The Virginia Veterinary Medical Association and the New River Health District urges all dog and cat owners whose pets have not had vaccinations or booster shots for rabies to see their vets.
In 1995, a record 27 cats and four dogs were reported rabid in Virginia. The total number confirmed cases of rabies was 458. The New River district confirmed 11 cases.
