Wendy Palmer scored 23 points and grabbed 19 rebounds Friday night as No.8 Virginia beat No.13 North Carolina State 77-69 in women's basketball.
The defeat denied Wolfpack coach Kay Yow her 500th coaching victory. Yow, trying to become the sixth coach in women's college basketball history to reach 500 victories, instead suffered her 195th loss.
Palmer had 15 points and 10 rebounds in the second half, when the Cavaliers (11-3, 3-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) used an early 10-0 run to take control. Tora Suber had 18 points for Virginia.
In another women's game:
Virginia Wesleyan 69, Roanoke 63: Amy Beisch pumped in a game-high 21 points as Virginia Wesleyan downed Roanoke in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game in Norfolk, handing the Maroons their second consecutive loss.
The Marlins (5-3, 4-2) made 23 of 36 free throws - Beisch knocked in 10 of 13 - compared to 10-of-21 free-throw shooting for Roanoke.
The Maroons (6-3, 4-2) were led by Amy Athey (Cave Spring) and Lori Boyd (Floyd County) with 15 points.
