Wytheville has moved its town recycling center from the Wythe Plaza Shopping Center to a space on West Monroe Street between the Wythe County Jail and Withers Park.
Recyclable wastes such as plastics, metals, glass and newspapers can be brought there three times a week, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
Townspeople must now pay $1 for each 32-gallon bag of solid waste picked up by weekly municipal waste haulers, or 50 cents for a 13-gallon bag. The charges were started because of the rising costs of waste disposal.
Payment is made by buying the appropriate tags from the town and attaching them to the bags when they are placed by curbs for pickup. They are also available at Duck's Grocery, Kincer-Miller Hardware, Dillon's IGA and Acme Supermarket, as well as from a coin dispenser machine by the main entrance to the Wytheville Municipal Building.
One result has been a surge in the amount of trash being dumped in the metal green boxes in Wythe County, but even that is only a temporary respite for town residents trying to avoid the pickup charges that became effective this year. The county containers will be removed at some point.
