FUND FALLS SHORT OF LAST YEAR'S MARK

This year's Good Neighbors Fund drive, which supports Roanoke Area Ministries' emergency financial assistance program and is sponsored by The Roanoke Times, fell short of last year's total of $102,000.

Although the drive officially ended Dec. 31, contributions continue to come in for several months afterward each year. Donations are accepted until the end of the fiscal year, but the names of the donors will not be published.

The final amount has yet to be tallied, but the annual fund-raiser brought in more than $100,000 for 1995.

Contributions were running about even with the previous year until the middle of December.

Unfortunately, said Wendy Moore, RAM's executive director, the drop in donations coincided with the furlough of Roanoke-based federal government workers and with cuts in the federal fuel-assistance program. RAM is already receiving applications for help from people affected by these events.

The agency, however, is grateful for the donations it did receive, Moore said. Every penny raised will go toward helping people with rent, utility and medical bills. None will be used for adminstrative costs.

Although monetary donations were down, the response to the agency's "wish list" of other items it needed was wonderful, Moore said.

In answer to a plea for replacements for an aging washer and dryer, Roanoke-area residents donated three used dryers and four used washers. Although there are hookups for only one of each, the agency has kept several of them in case of breakdowns.

Of the nine television sets RAM was offered, four were accepted, and the rest found homes elsewhere. Large amounts of food were donated, and there was a big increase in the number of volunteers who offered to work in the kitchen and the shelter, Moore said.

Two churches made substantial donations toward fixing the day shelter's rotting floors, and, along with several smaller contributions from individuals and other organizations, there should be enough money to replace the 15-year-old carpeting as well, Moore said.
