ALDERMAN, Hallie Alma Josephine, 83, of Hillsville, passed away Friday, January 12, 1996, at Twin County Regional Hospital. Born on March 2, 1912, in Grayson County, she was a daughter of the late William Ellis McRoberts and Lily Ella Bell Orange Dickens McRoberts. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Everette Alderman; two sons, Charles Elvis Alderman and Swanson Odell Alderman, and two grandsons, Swanson Howard Alderman and Jerry Wayne Alderman. She is survived by six sons, Frank Alderman and Douglas Alderman of Fries, Glenn Alderman of Ivanhoe, and Roscoe Alderman, Kenneth Alderman and Everett Reed Alderman of Hillsville; three daughters, Berline Smith of Dublin, Zennith Moore of Fries and Helena Pettry of Hillsville; her mother, Edith McRoberts of Fries; 31 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren, and 14 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, January 15, 1996, at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel, Hillsville, with the Revs. Avis Nester, Franklin Jones and Bush Bowman officiating. ARRINGTON, Harry Samuel, 74, of Route 5, Bedford, died Friday, January 12, 1996 in the Bedford County Memorial Hospital. He was born in Bedford County on April 4, 1921, a son of the late George Lee Arrington and Lydia Virginia Arrington. He was an Orchardist, owning and operating Arrington's Orchard and was a member of Laurel Grove Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Edmiston Arrington; three sons, Harry Steven Arrington, Barry Lynn Arrington and Andrew Ray Arrington, all of Bedford; two daughters, Brenda Arrington Parker, Bedford, Bernice Arrington Davidson, Lynchburg; one brother, Morris Reed Arrington, Bedford; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, January 15, 1996, at the Carder-Tharp Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Richard L. Dooley, the Rev. Floyd Gross and the Rev. James E. Wood officiating. Due to weather conditions, burial in Suck Springs Baptist Church Cemetery will be private. Memorials may be made to the Bedford Life Saving Crew. AYERS, Hollis, (``Sam""), 63, of Salem, passed away Friday, January 12, 1996, at his home. He was the son of the late Floyd and Cora Ayers. He was a heavy equipment operator for over 40 years. He was self-employed and owned his own business, H&S Ayers Grading. Surviving are his wife Shirley Sarver Ayers; a son Jeffrey M. Ayers; a daughter and son-in-law, Robin and Tony Lephew; grandchildren, Justin M. Ayers, Daniel L. Ayers and Austin T. Lephew; his father-in-law, Delbert R. Sarver; four brothers, four sisters, and many sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews. He will be sadly missed by his wife, children, son-in-law and grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, January 15, 1996, at the John M. Oakey and Son Funeral Home Chapel in Salem, with the Rev. William McDaniel officiating. DANIELS, Thomas Matthew, Sr., (``Tommy""), 64, of Bedford County, passed away Saturday, January 13, 1996. He was a member of Villa Heights Baptist Church, Vi nton Lodge #204 A.F.&A.M., Roanoke Scottish Rite Bodies and Kazim Shrine Temple, where he was active in the Klown Unit serving as a former director. He was a U. S. Air Force veteran and was a retired painter from Norfolk Southern. Surviving are three sons, Kenneth Daniels of Warner Robbins, Ga., and Thomas M. Daniels Jr. and Eric A. Daniels of Bedford County; a daughter, Beverly D. Goethe of Tennessee; seven grandchildren; four brothers and four sisters, Clifton, Doug, Van and Eldo Daniels, all of Bedford County, Hazel Peverall and Priscilla and Barbara Daniels, all of Bedford County, and Shirley Harris of Nashville, Tenn. DAVIS, Charles Benjamin, (``Ben""), 79, of Pell Avenue, Rocky Mount, died suddenly on Thursday, January 11, 1996. He began his career in the automotive business in 1938. In 1946, he was co-owner of Main Street Olds and GMC Trucks; in 1955, he opened Ben's Garage which became in 1961, Ben's GMC Trucks, Sales and Service. Mr. Davis retired in 1988. He was a member of Rocky Mount Christian Church, past treasurer of Rocky Mount Lion Club where he was a member of 40 years, member of the Elks Lodge in Martinsville and Rocky Mount Moose Lodge. Mr. Davis was preceded in death by his brother, John D. Davis. Surviving are his wife, Beulah Robertson Davis; one daughter, Janice Davis Pinckard of Roanoke; a special friend, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Earnest (``Dick"") and Betty M. Robertson of Wirtz; three sisters, Mrs. Evelyn Hunt of Lynchburg, Mrs. Ed (Ruby) Shepherd of Roanoke and Mrs. Roy (Bettina) Divers of Rocky Mount; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Josie Robertson Dillon of Rocky Mount, and several nieces and nephews. FLEENOR, Peggy A., 85, of Salem, died Friday, January 12,1996 at Lewis Gale Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Abraham Thomas and Delphia Harrell Fleenor. She is also preceded in death by a sister, Una F. Phlegar. Surviving are her nephews, Daniel H. Phlegar, Salem, and J. Thomas Phlegar, Charlotte, N.C.; along with three great-nephews and two great-nieces. She was born in McDowell Co., W. Va. on January 15, 1910 and later lived in Narrows, Va. After graduating from Radford College, she taught school in Giles County and the city of Alexandria, Va., where she was named the School Teacher of the Year by the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce. Upon retirement, she lived in Salem, Va. and was a member of Salem Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, January 15, 1996 at the John M. HARLOW, Clarence Easley, 62, of Glasgow , died Friday, January 12, 1996, at his residence. Born in Botetourt County on April 23, 1933, he was the son of the late Fred Hunt and Ruby Knick Hunt. Mr. Harlow had worked in the Maintenance Department of Burlington Industries for 40 years. He was a member of Natural Bridge Baptist Church, and was a former governor of Glasgow Moose Lodge #690. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Clarence Eugene and Ruby Harlow of Glasgow; a daughter and son-in-law, Lisa Harlow and Jackie Lee Smith of Glasgow; a son, Jeffrey Lynn Harlow of Glasgow; a sister, Blanche Shirley Ferguson of Roanoke, and a granddaughter, Winter Christina Harlow of Glasgow. HATCHER, Marian Overstreet, 92, of Forest, formerly of Montvale, died Friday, January 12, 1996 at Carriage Hill Retirement Center, Bedford. She was born in Bedford County December 19, 1903, a daughter of the late Charles Richard Overstreet and Susie Elizabeth Gordon Overstreet. She was a member of Montvale Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Madison Chesterfield Hatcher and four brothers, Richard C. Overstreet, Bennie C. Overstreet, Alfred S. Overstreet and Raymond J. Overstreet. She is survived by six sisters, Grace O. Manley, Lynchburg, Louise O. Overstreet and Edith O. Shelton, both of Forest, Margaret O. Saunders, Bedford, Bessie O. Burnette and Mary O. Padgett, both of Goode; also several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at Carder-Tharp Funeral Chapel at 2 p.m. Monday, January 15, 1996, with the Rev. Dewey V. Page officiating. HICKS, Dorothy Smith,of Harriman, Tenn., beloved wife of Leon C. Hicks for 56 years, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, January 12, 1996. She was the daughter of the late Earl and Virginia Smith of Rural Retreat, Va. A devoted wife and mother, a dedicated homemaker, her loving and gentle spirit will be missed by all whose lives she touched. She was also an accomplished musician and was always in great demand as a patient teacher of piano and organ. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a large family who will sorely miss her; four loving sons and their wives, Dr. Preston and Jody Hicks, Lexington, Ken., Denny and Katherine Hicks, Kings Mountain, N.C., Leon and Lane Hicks, Alexandria, Va., Clifford and Mary Hicks, Grand Haven, Mi. In addition, she leaves ten grandsons and one granddaughter; and one great-grandson and one great-granddaughter. She is also survived by a brother, Norvel Smith of Rocky Mount, N.C. and was preceded in death by another brother, Clifford ``Pete"" Smith, who was killed in World War II. KENT, David Cloyd, 87, of 44 7th Street, N .E., Pulaski, passed away Friday, January 12, 1996, in Pulaski Community Hospital. Born on April 5, 1980, in Lynchburg, he was the son of the late Dr. James Ligon Kent, physician, and Annie Donoho Bayliss Kent, artist. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sally Combs Kent. He was a well-known commercial and portrait photographer, furniture designer and artist. He attended Hampden-Sydney College and Clarence White School of Photography in New York City. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Army in the 2526th Service Unit, the official Photo Mail Section in the Pentagon, and news photographer for the Southwest Times. He was past president of Virginia Professional Photographers Association and the Rotary Club. He is survived by one sister, Margo Kent, a well-known photographer and portrait artist, of Woodstock. There will be no service. Visitation will be after 1 p.m. Sunday at Bower Funeral Chapel, 1631 Bob White Blvd., Pulaski, where friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday and Monday. Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski, is handling the arrangements.
LUTZ, Roxie Drummond, 87, of Eagle Rock, died Wednesday, January 10, 1996, in a Fincastle nursing home. She was the widow of William J. Lutz, and is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Hazel and Aubrey Kern, and a brother and sister-in-law, B. RICHARDSON, Mary Sue Landis, longtime resident of Roanoke, died Thursday afternoon, January 11, 1996 in a Richmond hospital after a long illness. A native of Harrisonburg, Va. (Harrisonburg High School, Class of 1946), Mary Sue Landis graduated from Madison College in 1949 and the Medical College of Virginia School of Nursing in 1952. In 1955, she married Thomas W. Richardson of Roanoke and the couple settled in the North Roanoke County area. After her children were old enough, Mrs. Richardson returned her nursing profession by becoming an Instructor at the Roanoke Memorial School of Nursing, where she worked until her retirement. She and her husband briefly lived in Wilmington, N.C. until his death in May of 1986. Mrs. Richardson then returned to Roanoke and in 1988, purchased the same house that she and her husband had built in 1955 but sold in 1969. She later worked as a nurse in the Adult Care Center of Roanoke Valley on Williamson Road in Roanoke. She is survived by two sons, Thomas Richardson Jr. (Spike, Northside Class of 1974) and James F. (``Rich"", Northside Class of 1977) ; a sister, Olivia F. ``Frankie"" Landis; and four grandchildren, Michael and Matthew of Richmond, Milana Sue and Eric of Central City, Iowa. She was one of the founding members of Northview United Methodist Church and a memorial service is planned there for Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. (time and date subject to change due to weather). RICHARDSON, Richard P., 74, of Rt. 2, Max Meadows, died Saturday, January 13, 1996 in the North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C. He was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II and a retired Alcohol Beverage Control officer. He was a member of the Ft. Chiswell United Methodist Church and Ivanhoe Masonic Lodge No. 235, A.F. & A.M. He is survived by his wife, Letha Sheffey Richardson, of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Richard W. ``Dick"" and Dianna Richardson, West Chester, Penn.; one grandson, Andrew Richardson, West Chester, Penn.; one sister, Helen Sheffey, Rt. 2, Max Meadows. Funeral services will be held Monday, January 15, 1996, at 2 p.m. at the Ft. Chiswell United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the Davis Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Barnett Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday or at the residence at any time. A memorial service will be conducted 8 p.m. Sunday by the Ivanhoe Masonic Lodge #235, A.F. & A.M. The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Lead Mines Rescue Squad, P. O. ROBERTSON, Lillie Phillips, 70, of Bedford, passed away Friday, January 12,1996 in the Bedford County Memorial Hospital. She was born May 12, 1925 in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Eldridge Phillips and Lena Orange Phillips. She is survived by her husband, Cecil D. Robertson; five sons, William Cecil ``Boy"" Robertson, Billy Dale Robertson, Roger D. Robertson, Michael W. Robertson, David D. Robertson, all of Bedford; three daughters, Patsy J. Johnson, Knoxville, Tenn., Patty A. Robertson, Bedford, Vickie L. Overstreet, Lynchburg; five sisters, Lelia White, Bedford, Ida Karns, Seymour, Indiana, Lucille Isenhour, Jacksonville, N.C., Margie Johnson, Charlottesville, Rachel Ruff, Forest; four brothers, Thomas O. Phillips, John G. Phillips, both of Thaxton, Charles W. Phillips, Bedford, Bobby K. phillips, Buffalo, N.Y.; 14 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, January 15, 1996, at 2 p.m. from the Updike Funeral Chapel, Bedford, by the Rev. Earl Ragland and the Rev. Ralph Laughon. THOMPSON, Inez M., 89, of Rich Creek, died Monday, January 8, 1996 in Roanoke, Va. Born April 19, 1926, she was the daughter of the late William A. and Margaret E. Ballard Suttle. Mrs. Thompson was a former employee of the Hoechst-Celanese Corp. at Narrows, Va. She was a member of the Glen Lyn Christian Church and was a member of the Senior Bowling League at Mountaineer Lanes in Bluefield, W. Va. Mrs. Thompson was preceded in death by her husband, C. Raymond Thompson and two brothers, James and Raymond Suttle. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Don ``Deborah"" Poda, Vinton, Mrs. Steve ``Jane"" Mitchell, Troutville; two brothers, David Suttle, Rich Creek, and Bobby Suttle, Peterstown; nine sisters, Mrs. Mackie ``Bonnie"" Mullins, Mrs. Jackie ``Darlene"" Clemons and Mrs. Dale ``Patty"" Brotherton, all of Rich Creek, Dorothy Ratcliffe, Mrs. Washington ``Maxine"" Elitchko and Franceina Turner, all of Narrows, Nedra Orr, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Betty Cockerham, Fairfax and Mrs. Joe ``Eleanor"" Dunn, Peterstown; one granddaughter, Kimberly Morgan and her husband Steve ; and one grandson, Kristopher Poda.
